My idea of the best small breed is the Yorkshire Terrier. They do not shed or have dandruff and keeping their hair short does away with the brushing. They love people unless taught otherwise and can be taught to use a litter box.

The hairless variety of the Chinese crested, the poodle, the chihuahua, the Mexican hairless and the Italian greyhound are all good choices. All skin produces dander, but with no undercoat, those fine hairs that carry it around the house are minimized. I have two full size greyhounds for five years and no problems.
Go to the akc.org website and put in characteristics; they will give you a list of breeds. Put the breed into google and get the adoption websites. Fine way to get a healthy homeless dog you know something about for the price of the shots and transportation. Good luck; it is great having a pet when you are home bound

Poodles...don't shed. The have hair somewhat like human hair. It continues to grow, thats why you see some poodles with hair to the ground, if thats how their owners have them groomed. Their hair will eventually fall out however they do not shed twice a year like typical dogs do. The dander, is also different from other dogs.

poodles... my brother was allergic to dogs growing up, so we got one. They dont shed, they must be clipped a couple times a year anyway. No dandruff if cared for reasonably. Very, very intelligent (top breed in intelligence), loving, brave, and omg you would fall in love... please consider a poodle. Good Luck!

My friends who have poodles or cairns (Sp?)terriers swear by them for that reason. Then their is this really "so ugly they are cute" breed of dogs that is completely hairless. I do not know what they are called.

schnauzers,shih-tzu, yorkies just to name a few....schnauzers are an easier upkeep but they can be a little hyper..shih-tzu & yorkie require more hair combing but this could be a great incentive for a lap dog...they are some of the best for that.
