Any cat can be a good pet. I am not sure what you want to spend. I am intrigued by ragdolls, they are just beautiful and act more like a dog, but they can get huge. You should go to the local animal shelters and let a kitty pick you. Thats what happened to us, we were adopted by a cat, he followed us home from a walk and he is still here.

go to your local Humane Society Animal Shelter to adopt your cat
(I don't work for one, honest! but I have adopted cats from them)
they will help you pick out the best type of cat for your needs, like if you live in an apartment or out in the country, will the cat be alone or will there be other pets in the house, will the cat be left alone during the day, etc etc
rough guide
unless there will be someone home most of the time, a kitten is NOT a good idea
exotic cats, like siamese and burmese cats, and mixes, need LOTS of exercise or they will tear your furniture apart
long haired cats actually shed less than short hair cats, but they need lots of grooming
boy cats will almost always spray, even the neutered ones, unless they are neutered really young
good luck!

It really depends on what kind of kitty you want. Do you think a good pet is quiet and docile or is a good pet for you friskey and rambunctuous(spell ?)? All cats have different personalities. Spend some time with a potential pet to see if he possesses the personality you're looking for. Maine Coons are really playful while persians tend to be quieter. Go to your local shelter and see who's in there. Plan to hang out for a hour or so getting aquainted with different kitties till you find the right one. Good luck!

I think any mixed breed cat would make a good pet. Pure bred animals often have more problems than mixed breeds. Go to your local shelter. The folks there should be able to give you some good advice and help in picking out the perfect pet.

Most cats are good natured and will reward you with years of companionship if you look after them well. But if you are set on getting a pedigree breed then the British Shorthair is very good. They are stocky big cats and very hardy. They were bred from the original street cats and have a good nature. You can get coloured varitities like Black, Blue, Cream etc. or Tabby varities.

They look very similar to an ordinary moggie but if you look closely there is a difference.

The kitty pound breed. ^____^ Those are some of the most friendly cats you will ever find. That and before you run out and buy a cat, nine times out of ten they have the same breed your looking for at the pound.

My Persian was the best cat I have ever had and the only purebred I've ever had. Very devoted to me like a dog(even protective). He would snuggle up to my head in bed and purr and pat me. He was so sweet! But....I don't think I would ever get another Persian because of all the grooming. Combing every day and washing eyes and a bath once a month and blow-dried. But he was beautiful! Mine was white. But a lifetime of daily grooming is a long-term commitment.

I have a ginger tom and a black long haired tom they are completely different in temperament as are humans the ginger if over friendly and has never scratched, bit or attacked whereas the black cat is very temperamental and although I love him dearly I wouldn't trust young children round him for fear of them getting hurt......
