In the U.S. it is traditional on the left hand. I understand in some other countries it is traditional to wear on the right hand.
I have a cousin who received a family heirloom as an engagement ring. Although Diamond, it was an odd shape and did not work well with the wedding ring so she wears the wedding ring on her left hand and the engagement ring on her right hand.
Ultimately, I think it is up to you.

I think it's up to you. Traditionally it's worn on the left hand (assuming it's given to a girl) but it's not as if wearing it on the right hand will make it not an engagement ring.

It's up to you. You don't have to follow tradition if you feel more comfortable wearing it on the right hand - after all, the jewelers are now marking right hand rings, so it isn't that out of the ordinary. The only thing that matters is that you love your fiancee and are wearing the ring to celebrate your love. Where you choose to wear it is your choice. The wedding industry is full of "rules" but most of them are designed to get you to spend more money. I say throw out the rules and do what feels right for you. This is your life and your wedding - not the bridal industry's.

Wear it on your pinky toe for all I care! It doesn't matter where you wear the ring because the ring is pretty meaningless to everyone except you and your spouse and possibly a few close friends and family members.
Hell, I don't even have or wear an engagement ring. I thought it was silly especially considering that a man doesn't usually wear an engagement ring and mine refused. I feel as if me wearing a ring and him not wearing a ring is like him owning or branding me as his. As you can tell, I'm really not one to fall for shiny things.

When I was engaged I was told to wear it on my right hand. Then when we got married, I was told to wear my ring on my left hand. I am not sure why, I guess it is just a silly tradition.

Contrary to others' answers here, of course it can be worn on the right hand and, of course, it is still an engagement ring!
I wear my engagement and wedding rings on my right hand, according to the custom from my husband's country, in Eastern Europe. I agreed to do so because he asked me to, and it's been nice to be different!

usually when you are engaged you wear it on your left hand, for example if you broked off the engagement, and he told you to keep it. and you do like it , I don't see why you couldn't wear it on your right hand. but that was a tradition, now days i really don't think it harming anything if you wear it on whatever hand you want to wear it. It is all up to you,

It's usually worn on the left because it is the hand closest to the heart. Personally, I wouldn't feel right wearing mine on my right....but that's just me.

it's customary to wear it on your left hand, but you can do whatever you want. Nowadays the men are wearing engagement rings also. Old traditions are romantic. But you two can start your own one. It's cool...............
