as you know a cat will run after anything small, they are playing,,, if you pull a string etc in front of a cat they will pounce on it,, hence a rat will cause a cat to pounce and play,,, the rat on the other hand senses danger and wants to get out of there

Mukesh you must understand that cat and rat are at danggers drawn on each other. Cat wants to catch rat whereas rat runs to protect his life from the claws of cat. I think it is now clear to you Mukesh.

Well, actually I have a pet cat and many pet rats, and some of them get along with the cat.

My Smokey (the rat) sleeps with my kitten, and they groom each other.

I suppose it would be instinct though for your question. But in my opinion it would decide on your two animals you are putting together.

It is just natural instinct.

For instance if you trail a string by a cat or roll a ball it just cannot resist chasing it - it is inbuilt. With a rat it instantly recognises a larger predator and decides to run.
