No 10 year old needs a cell phone

I would certainly get him a cell phone if he walks to or from school. I did the exact thing when my son turned 10. Stay away from the pay as you go phones like Trac-Fone. They are very hard to work with and minutes unused expire on a monthly basis. It was MUCH cheaper and easier on the mind to just get a family plan with shared minutes. I suggest you lay down the law as to who he may call at first and show him how you are able to monitor it. Good Luck.

Yes, I recommend Net 10. they only charge 10 cents per minute and they do not charge you a fee. the cards cost 30.00 and gives you 300 minutes. lets say someone hurts the teacher and he is in school with his phone in his pocket, he can call for help. Lets say he was going to get in a fight, he can call you from the restroom for you to back him up. lets say he is sick and the school nurse wont give you a call, he can call you. Lets say, he wants to call you because he missed the school bus and he needs a ride home. Even if he runs out of minutes 911 can be called for free. you can be driving and you crash and he is with you and calls for help.. 10 years old is a little young but if matured the phone is helpful. Is your child or you worth 30.00 dollars a month if the answer is yes. then buy it.

I would. In this day and age it is important that we are able to get in touch with our children. There are a few very good pre paid plans. Cingular has one that has free nights and weekends and you can set it up to come out of your account monthly (it can be canceled at anytime) T-Mobile offers a nice pre paid plan for children but you must have a T-Mobile account to get the one made especially for children. However they also have a regular prepaid plan that it very good. I have also seen commercial for a Disney pre paid plan but I am not sure how you go about getting it. Adding him to your family plan is also an option but remember you are locked into a contract and there is also the possibility of overage.

I think you would know what is best for him. If you feel he needs one for some reason like always going to places for school functions, or walking around town , or hanging out at someone elses house and they may not have a phone. I bought both my daughters one. Very glad I did and don't regret it a bit. I am able to call and check on them anytime, and my mind is at more ease.

I got my 10 year old daughter a Firefly. It allows her to keep in touch with me when I am not with her, but also I am able to pre-program the phone so she's not calling up all her friends. I got her the phone for emergencies.
