Our family has owned all of those breeds as pure breeds. Of the 4 you listed the Beagle/Retriever is the best mix. Cocker Spaniels while beautiful are very temperamental and though they can be taught to be a member of the family; we have found that they are not really good with strangers and kids. Retrievers and beagles are extremely social dogs as well as breeds that enjoy activity. Watch out for loyalty though they have a habit of going with anyone because they are so very social. Beagle/Retriever mix will be happy with others and can do very well with other animals. Beagles aren't hyper but keep in mind that they are a hunting bread and thuse ready willing and able to do your bidding. Shelter pets make wonderful pets. You are doing a wonderful thing. Everyone wants a puppy but NOone wants a dog which is why our shelters are so over crowded. Good Luck to you.

How you are going to chose is based on the place you live, how busy you are and how much you can handle.I have a book stating the the temperament of the three breeds and it was written that the retriever can socialize better than other dogs, better to train and is more suitable to stay in a house with a garden for it to play, it is very active and needs to exercise a lot. The cocker spaniel (I have one)is calmer and easier to keep in an apartment, and is easy to groom if you keep its hair short, it can be quite playful sometimes, but is not very hard to handle. The Beagle is active and bold and easy to train, you can keep it in an apartment but more suitable to be kept in a house with a garden.

The beagle/retriever mix is best because of the temperament of the retriever. I think it's great that you are so generous and loving enough to give a pound puppy a home..that's where i got my 3 from too as well as my 2 cats.

No one can tell you which of these dogs will be better for you. First we don't your temperament and second we don't know the individual animals temperament. That said, I can tell you this.
I worked for a utility company for several months as a field representative. During that time I encountered many dogs. Certainly hundreds and maybe as many as a thousand. The only dog who proved successful at getting behind me and actually biting me was a Cocker.
So there is my two cents worth.
I do recommend the most mixed up breed you can get though. The closer a dog is to a mutt the better they seem to be as a pet. I lost my girl to old age a few months ago and am not ready for a new friend yet but if I ever am, it will be the most mixed up dog I can locate.
Good luck on your choice, I'm sure you will do fine...

WELL....I have a cocker spaniel, and my comment is about what you said about "the spaniel calm him down". At least to me, cockers are way hyper...when my cocker was a pup, he was on the go all the time.
Don't know much about breeding and what qualities might manifest themselves more in each case, so can't say much more. Retrievers are supposed to be really smart; cockers are supposed to be on the smart end, but not as high on the list as retrievers.

I’ve followed all of my pets from both breed-special rescue (greyhounds) or our neighborhood animal safe haven. In each case, I’ve felt blessed with a colourful new member of our household. Our cat was once two days clear of being euthanized. Apparently some of the volunteers made a observe on his ‘rap sheet’ that he didn’t use a clutter field competently. We proposal that was once terrible motive for a cat to be positioned to loss of life, so we followed him. five years later, he’s in no way ignored the clutter field as soon as! We have a Siberian Husky combine we picked up on the identical safe haven a couple of weeks in the past! He’s been an absolute pleasure to the household. He has a few habits problems, however we’re running diligently on our coaching and doing higher everyday. Our Dachshund combine additionally got here from the identical safe haven. He had a few habits problems too, however now he suits proper in with the household. Adopt a mut. Best selection you’ll ever make.

Terriers are prone to digging and cockers are prone to taking off (they love to chase birds)!! Beagles, I'm not too sure about. My best suggestion is to read about both types of animals over the internet to read about their temperament, size, energy level, etc. HEre are some sites to help you...

I had a dog once that was half cocker spaniel, and he was very loving and playful. I was a boy then, and he always went running in the woods with me.

i think the best dog mix would be the beagle/retriever mix......beagles are very hyper but the retreiver is a very tame dog so it kinda equals out...also they are the best with other dogs..they would be veryyyy playful!!!!
