What if some unbelievers are actually closer to God than many believers?

Imagine if we all follow the same course of faith over a very very very long time. Then maybe we start off:

1. Believing in God, and following scripture and rituals.

2. Then go through a period of doubt and suspicion,

3. Then go through a short period of true understanding,

4. Then reach "heaven".

In this scenario, most people would be in either stages 1 or 2, and those in stage 2 are actually more advanced. So I would think God wants them to continue with their doubt until all their doubts are satisfied. We know about as much about God as the goldfish knows about the ocean.

Before I became a Christian, my life was so consumed with grief, confusion, jealousy, materialism and anger that it made it impossible to really live a productive happy life.
When I claimed Jesus Christ as my savior everything changed.
The Lord put a terrible burden on me, it brought me to the end of myself, and I called out to God, He answered and claimed me as His child.
I was invovled with an Atheist. He lives a sad, lonely, depressed, alcoholic, tortured, abandoned, false, selfish and miserable existence.
I tried to talk to him about God. At first he was open, he turned back to Atheism and demanded I abandon Christ for him. We split up needless to say.
I think what happens is God will burden these lost persons so heavily that they will be reckoned with their own disillusionment, they will turn to God in the darkest hour and hopefully accept Him into their lives.
I can only speak from experience.

God knows every person and wants each one to spend eternity with him. Knowing the sinful nature of us all he provided the only sacrifice that would satisfy the claims of justice and allow anyone to obtain the relationship with Him necessary for that to happen. He accepts us as we are allowing us to accept Him.

Believers or non-Believers God loves Each and Everyone of us. God has Grace and Mercy on our soul until Judgment. Then there will be no more Grace and Mercy. We have our choices to make on our own to Believe or not to Believe. It is your choice.

Theres no proof that god exists, nor that there was a 'big bang' so i suggest everyone just leave the topic. i dont allow things that i dont believe exist to control my life or influence it in any way, therefore he does not know me as i dont know him, a man-made theory.
how do you think non-believers feel about him?
