First it depends on your relationship to the baby and family. If you're a friend you can give diapers (always a good thing), baby body care products, receiving blankets and hoodie towels. If you're family you can give some of the items above with maybe a couple of outfits, not just in new born sizes. If you want to give more see if a few people want to go in on a stroller, other carriers, or maybe even a playpen. Ask if the baby is registered at a store and check out what they need. If you can't afford anything big, split the cost with someone or give them a gift card and let them pick out what they didn't get. To be honest most new mothers have a big wish list and really don't know what they should be getting. I'd say stick to the essentials.

Anything that a baby or a new mom would need is appropriate. These days more and more people have gift registries for baby showers. If I know about that, I usually try to buy something from the registry because it's something they have already identified that they would like/need.

obviously something for the baby....check to see if the mom is registered at one of the baby stores and then choose something from her list...if not then what you buy depends on how well you know her and how much you want to spend....buy the new baby an outfit or two...if you buy several items then get things the baby can wear now and things the baby can wear 6 months from now...good luck

It depends on the family you are giving the gift to's income. I was thrilled with diapers when I was pregnant. They cost so much! My father-in-law gave us the cradle that had been in the family for three generations. It was made by my husband's great, great. great grandfather in Queensland Australia.
I give gifts that they can really use, not for just show.

Find out if they are registered somewhere, and just get them a little something from the list. Baby clothes are always needed!
