Before you get a scanner, find out if the law enforcement agencies in you area are on the "trunking" system. Trunking works like cell phones, they change channels as you are conversing on the air. Also find out if your agencies are on analog, or digital. This makes a big difference. If you don't find out this info in advance, you are liable to hear on;ly one side of the police calls, and you wasted your money for nothing. MAKE DARN SURE THE SCANNER YOU BUY WILL BE ABLE TO PICK UP BOTH SIDE OF THE RADIO TRANSMISSION..

they can be fun, especially if you live in a big city. radio shack has a good stock of choices,i would suggest just get a hand held scanner not too expensive and check it out before going on to something bigger. you may also want to get a hold of a book called radio call also offered by radio shack you can look up the city where you live and find out how many stations are available to you and what type,i.e. fire, police, government, trains, sporting events etc.you will also need this book to learn the radio mumble jumbo(call signs,415's (disturbance),211's(robberies)etc.). it can be really exciting. good luck and have fun. remember there are laws that govern the use of a radio scanners you may want to check those out too.
