Kayamat. I never said it was my view; and shallow question, perhaps, but it got a response. Which is what its here for.

Jesus said in prayer to his Father "Sanctify them by means of the truth. Your word is truth (John 17:17) and the apostle Paul stated at Titus 1:2 that God cannot lie .(also see Numbers 23:19). Therefore, as witnesses of Jehovah and followers of Jesus Christ, they adhere to the Bible as the foremost authority on religion (the way of life). Therefore, it is important to Jehovah's Witnesses that not only the manner in which Jesus died be accurate but all things regarding Jehovah God, his purpose and his son, Jesus, be accurate according to God's word, the Holy Scriptures (the Bible).) Regarding the use of the word "cross", Vines Expository Dictionary on Words of the New Testament states that the primary translation of the word "stauros" is an upright stake or pole. The words used in the Greek Interlinear Scriptures regarding the means of Jesus' death are "stauros" (primarily an upright stake or pole) not "crux" (cross) and "stauroo" (hung on a stake) not "crucified". Also, the result of being impaled to a stake with the hands nailed above the head and the legs straight down with the feet nailed to the stake would cause the tkdiaphragm to collapse due to the lack of the expanding of the chest and lungs within a short period of time resulting in the inability to breathe, and certain death. The Jews were responsible to execute Jesus (John 19:5-7, 14-16; Luke 23:20-25; Mark 20:10-15), not the Romans. True, the Israelites under the Mosaic Law had certain requirements for offering blood sacrifices; however, the ones serving Jehovah God under his son's (Jesus Christ's) appointed rulership are not under the law of Moses--Hebrews 9:1-13, 23, 24. Hence, under the new covenant (Luke 22:19, 20) Jesus presented his ransom sacrifice to God in heaven as a propitiatory sacrifice for mankind's sins (1 John 2:2).

There could have been several other means of execution for sure. But the Christian "symbol" was prophesied and fulfilled at The Cross. In taking His clothes for a souvenir, in gambling for his robe and giving Him vinegar mixed with gall to drink, (Ps 22:18; 69:21). The nails driven into hands and feet by Roman soldiers and the spear that pierced His side drew forth the blood of our redemption—all in fulfillment of prophecy!

That's a great question.
I've studied their crucifixion method of execution (a very horrid method, by the way) but never really looked at their other methods. Because the cross was their most brutal form of execution, and because the Romans were very brutal yet civilized people at that time, I would venture to say that they favored crucifixion. Hollywood can't come close to portraying the real pain felt by crucifixion.

But to answer your question, I guess they could have stoned Jesus but that was an ancient Hebrew method, not Roman. They could have used swords or thrown Him to the lion's den. Yet because God's prophets foretold of the Messiah's death on the cross thousands of years before it happened, there couldn't be any other way.

Even as a Hindu let me say that this was the greatest event of self sacrifice, for a belief 'to be forgiving and tolerant to your fellow man'.

Lord Jesus endured such torture, upon the cross, to prove his belief was right.

The cross became a symbol of THIS.

Your question implies that the cross is just a symbol of the method of execution. What a shallow view!!!!

Actually Crucifixion was invented by the Phoenicians apparently and couldn't be inflicted on fully-fledged Roman citizens.

Good question. Maybe the USA citizens should wear necklaces with an empty gun cartridge case attached to "remember" John Kennedy.

It had to be on the cross because it repesented the curse

(Galatians 3:13) Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree (cross)
