It would mean unemployment for lots of people. What is your problem? Is it really necessary for my grandma to learn English if she doesn’t feel like learning?

The European Union has or will have around 20 official languages. The up side is that sooner or later they will have to shift to a common language because translation services are costing millions of Euros. So they WILL eventually have to do it because the money is otherwise wasted, much like the UN with it's six official languages which spends upwards of $100 million a year per official language.
At the UN, Esperanto has official observer status and has been shot down as an official working language twice; first by the French in the 20's and then by the Americans in the 50's because at each respective time those languages were considered the language of diplomacy. So just like the UN, the EU will eventually call on an International, easy to learn language, to fill the void.
The lack of jingle in their pockets will be the deciding factor, because the human nature that says 'we need more money' will override the human nature that says 'we will not give up the sovereignty of our tongue'.
