I don't have a dog, as the apartment complex where I live doesn't allow them (I do have two cats, a Siamese and an Abyssinian). If I COULD have a dog, I would like to have a Sheltie. We had one when my son was little, and he was a great little dog; unfortunately, the dog died of a heart attack when he was about 10 years old.

I have a pound puppy, he's a black lab and I think Rott mix, he has a head of a rott but the personality of a lab, unless you come up to the door, then he barks...with his tail wagging but he barks. I figure the noise alone is enough to keep out potential bad guys, He's pretty big too which can't hurt. Little do the bad guys know, he'd carry a tv for them if they came in.

I have a gorgeous 5 month old Australian Shepherd named Loki (norse god of mischief) who lives up to his name sake! I get the similar look of the border collie I love without all the constant hyperactivity and dont need such a massive yard! He is just gorgeous even if a little troublemaker and attention seeker!

A boston terrier. He is of the small variety, meaning he doesn't take up much space on the sofa. ;-) We live in northern Thailand, where bostons aren't common, so he gets lots of attention from the local folks.
