It mostly depends on how strong you like it, how bitter you want it, and if you're planning it for a wake-up drink or a meal beverage. A good AM beverage to wake up to is about 4 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of coffee in a drip pot. Go from there. Too strong, add water or reduce coffee by a teaspoon in the next pot. Too weak, add coffee or reduce amount of water. You can add milk, cream, and/or sugar. Have fun and let me know what your perfect strength is.

Grind whole coffee beans right before brewing. Automatic drip makers are great and the filter gets rid of unwanted sediment and oils. Ideally, make the recommended amount of coffee for your particular unit. i.e. if you have a 10 cup maker, then make 10 cups for the ideal brewing (Obviously this is often excessive but it makes the best brew). Finally, and most importantly, drink the coffee soon after making it as this is when the aroma, flavor and beneficial antioxidants are ideal. Clean you machine regularly for consistently good flavor.
