Went for dinner at fancy restaurant, valet misplaced my 06 bmw m3 key and got into the hands of a crook. Theft happened in less than half an hour, and I reported it stolen right away. Police told me my plates came up on this machine that reads them before you cross the international border to mexico, so thats how I know crooks took it to tijuana mex. I was with the impression that they would find it within hours (lojack), but its been 2 weeks already and nothing. Im pretty sure its long gone, and it being in Mexico already, well you get the point.

Has anyone else had a similar incident as well??
Why werent they able to find my car ??
was it because it was in another country ??
lojack transmitter failed?
out of reach?

Theft rings know where the Lojack transmitters are located. It only takes a few seconds to disable it. It's an interesting idea but unless it's been installed by an expert it will be history before it can even be activated.

The Mexican police are not noted for putting a lot of effort into recovering stolen cars -- especially those stolen from gringos. As likely as not, the locals are in the pockets of the thieves anyway.

One of two things happened to your ride. It was taken to a chop shop and was probably half disassembled by the time you reported the theft. Or it was loaded onto a sea container and was shipped off to South America, Eastern Europe, or Africa where there are few title laws to concern ones self with.

NEVER leave a key with a valet. It's just too easy to snag a key -- often with the remote attached or integrated into the key making locating the car a no-brainer -- and drive off into the night never to be seen again. There's even a strong chance that the valet was in cahoots with the thief and had him on his cell phone before you were even seated.

If you live in a border area, drive a beater. Cold, hard fact of life.

Please stay on the U.S. side of the border. Tijuana is not what it used to be when the streets were filled with tourists and you could buy crappy little souvenirs. The streets are empty because it's not a safe place to be at the moment. This is just a small bit of information I found when I googled "Tijuana Safety 2009." "These days, sidewalk restaurants along Tijuana's main tourist street, Avenida Revolucion, often are empty. Tourists are buffeted by barkers and merchants desperate for U.S. dollars. Visitors may be approached with offers of drugs or prostitution as well." "The violence in Tijuana grew toward the end of last year and continued this year with numerous execution-style slayings. Many of the bodies were found decapitated. The State Department has issued a travel alert for Americans going to Mexico.".

WOW i'm soooo sooo sorrie to hear that ur 06 m3 got jacked. i know that lo jack isn't a great choice from customers that i talk to that have it. c if u can file a suit against them, to me thats fraud. the next time u decide to go with a security wit a tracker i highly recommend that u go with the viper tracking system its the best its what i have on my car. the call center calls u to notify that someone is/has broken into ur car.

If it hit one of the Mexican chop shops, it's already been sold in pieces and the lo-jack transmitter has long since been dead. You have notified your insurance company, right? And being new you had full coverage right? They will eventually settle with you.

Forget the lojack, its not going to bring the car back.
Call your insurance company and report it stolen.
This is why you have auto insurance.
