Sometimes my cat gags when she sniffs something she doesn't like. I have had cats before (granted they were outside cats) but I never noticed this behavior before. I was just wondering if this is a normal action for cats. Thanks

lets see, i am pretty sure she doesn't like what she smells, it is not just opening her mouth, it is actual gagging like she's about to throw up. One time she did throw up as she was doing this gag. She does this when smelling citrus mainly, but other random things as well. Then she will sometimes glare at me.

How do you know she doesn't like it? Cats gag because they are trying to bring up hair balls from their stomach. They can not digest hair from constantly grooming themselves. Get Petromalt at a pet store for hairballs and give her a small amount regularly. Cats that smell something they aren't familiar with, open their mouths to bring more air in to better analyze scent signals. It's called a "flehmen". Horses do it also.

perhaps that's the drugs - or a hair ball- or a mixture of the two- in case you have not already-i could tell your vet- I'ts probable not something severe whether this is often sturdy to earnings- some situations cats do in simple terms that- ill or not- besides-i'm hoping he gets extra helpful quickly!

My cat does this all the time. It's called the Flehmen response and it's totally normal. :)
