I'm a teen and I'm getting a dog next summer. I'd like a dog that's on the smaller side, though NOT teacup...
quiet, good for kids, trainable, and good for first timers. Iwas thinking of a cavalier king charles spaniel...would that work?

I'm not for yorkies or chihuahuas though...

Try a boston terrier. It never barks. If it does, it sound like a squek.

You don't say if you're male or female--I'm guessing female. I would have to know more about your family to give you an honest answer. One thing about Cavaliers (and I have two) is they need to be with their owner (e.g., a strong desire to be near you or near some human companion). If you're like most of the teens I know, you're going to be busy--especially over the summer. Don't get a Cavalier if you have a busy schedule; I would suggest a teacup Poodle or a small terrier. Again, a Cavalier would not be happy if he or she were alone a lot.

So, if you see yourself wanting a close bond with your new dog, then the Cavalier might work. If you have a busy life, I'm not sure that would be the best match.

Good luck!

I think you need to look at the different breeds, what type of breed depends on many things, ie., how much have you got to buy your dog? how much money would you have for food (bigger the more money you would need), insurance, bedding, other pets in your house hold, large or small home, garden? how long would your dog be at home alone for? do you like walking, some breeds need a lot of walking where others don't? Why don't you go through the list of breeds on epuz, that will give you an idea on size, grooming, food, guard dog, types of breeds like toy, working.
I no this is probably not what you wanted to hear, but its not about going out and buying a sweet little pup, when they grow up a lot of work is need. I have chihuahuas, i no you didn't want one, and i don't think they are suited for you neither would pomeranian's. Good luck finding the right dog.

Be aware that King Charles Spaniels or any Spaniel for that matter have to be trimmed regularly. They don't come trimmed. Their hair constantly grows. There is a lot of maintenance on a dog that has to be groomed. It does get expensive as they have to be trimmed every 6-8 weeks. Spaniels are not the easiest dogs to train either. Shetland Sheepdogs make wonderful pets for kids. Some of them can be yappy, so they have to be debarked by a vet. They are long hair and have an undercoat, so constant brushing is in order. They don't have to be clipped. Corgi's make wonderful pets also. They are quiet, shorter haired, smart and very loyal. Rat Terriers are extremely smart, loyal, great with kids, short haired with little to no coat care. They are hunters, and will kill rodents, and small prey animals. Good Luck!

Cavaliers don't need clipping and they are shown natural, which means you can't clip their hair before they go in the show ring. A friend of mine has them and they are very smart and loyal. They are even trainable for obedience or agility if you are interested. Very cute but you can get poorly bred ones so research breeders well and know what they should be like before looking. The AKC has breed standards on their website. If you like them you should go for it. Just take your time getting the right one and remember a dog is for life and they are not throw aways. Make sure you are committed to at least 15 years of caring for your dog.

I have a corgi. She's small and sweet and the fastest learning dog I've ever owned. She's a Pembroke. But she's also very vocal because of her breed's herding lineage, so she enjoys telling you when she wants something.

Corgis are excellent, but if you want quiet, you may be better off with a Cardigan than a Pembroke.

One downside would be finding a breeder close to you. I highly doubt you'll find one at a pet shop or a shelter. But on that note, have a look at the shelter dogs. Staff should be very animal-oriented and friendly there, so speak to them about the dogs. Maybe they'll have that "perfect pup."

Good luck. :)

If I were you, I would go to the R.S.P.C.A., or whoever deals with rehousing dogs. Not sure what these places are called in England.

You will definitely require a small dog and there is bound to one there that will steal your heart, as soon as you see it. Don't be put off by the humble Mongrel, they make excellent pets.

All dogs need training well from day one and you must be prepared to dish out loads and loads of love........................if you want a friend for life.

Be prepared for lots of expenses i.e., Vets bills, injections, spaying or neutering, nourishing food, chipping, a warm coat for winter, brushes and combs for daily grooming and remember that dogs like the Cavalier need regular cutting or trimming etc., etc.

Good luck.

Cavaliers are awesome (NOT CHEAP but awesome) I am currently researching for a pup and the cavs are at the top of my list! They are great with kids, cats, other dogs and very well rounded, smart & versitile small dog.
Don't forget about college though... what will happen to your little friend when you start out on your own... it is hard to find places to live that allow pets and it is not usually cheap either.

Cavalier's are brill dogs! Mine is nearly 2 and is so lovely, I'd definetly have another one. They are easy to train, good with kids, small but not too small, they don't need lots exercise, they love to learn and please too plus they're not yappy. Beware of their big brown eyes though, it's so hard to not give in to them! :) They do shed but it's not too much esp if you get into the habit of brushing everyday. Mine doesn't get trimmed - there's no need, some owners have a 'puppy cut' but that's their personal choice.

Although Cav's are smartish dogs my 1st dog was a toy poodle now they are very clever dogs! Quiet, easy to train, good with kids, smallish and don't shed either which is always a bonus.
