Generally when you open quicktime, it will ask if you wish to associate file types to Quicktime, in that case just hit yes and it should make it default for most all audio types. Except for of course the ones that it can not play (i.e. - Windows Media Files, Real Player Files, etc.)
Otherwise, goto
Start > Quicktime > QuickTimePlayer
(From here it should ask you if you wish to associate the files, if so, hit yes. If not, read on).
Once Quicktime opens, click on "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences"
A Quicktime Settings window should appear, click on the tab "File Associates" on the top.
Now check the button that says "Use Defaults", then click "Apply" and then "OK". Your done!
All this is assuming you have the latest version of QuickTime. If you do not, download from "www.quicktime.com.

well when you install Quick Time, it should of asked "would you like to set quick time as your default player?"
also
could also try right clicking a music/video file, properties, and where it says "open with windows media player/ quick time" click change, and select 'Quick Time' and that should do the trick, works for me
