Funny - I was just talking about this with a gentleman at work. I told him that I have noticed driving, courtesy, obeying laws, etc has gone down the drain since I was a younger girl. I agree with the previous posters, that an increase in stupidity, lack of manners, and that "fast food" mentality, are definitely factors.
I also think that increases in technology (e.g., ABS, airbags, etc) unfortunately give too many people that false sense of security.

1. Because these idiots think the whole world revolves around them.
2. Because these idiots have never sat down and done the math of comparing the driving time for their route at the speed limit vs. 10 or 15 or 20 over. For most, the difference is mere minutes and so the proper conclusion is it ain't worth it. But don't expect idiots to reach a proper conclusion anyway.
3. Because these idiots have a cell phone stuck to their heads and they aren't thinking about driving anyway.
4. One thing that's almost always true about the tailgating/passing to get right-in-front-of-you idiot: as soon as they do get in front of you, they turn off at the next exit. WTF???

It's spelled S-T-U-P-I-D. I've found a way to make most tailgaters back off though. If you're on the freeway and in the fast lane, ease over to the left until you've got two tires in all that gravel and assorted crud that always gathers there. At any speed over 35 mph lots of that stuff gets tossed right back onto the bimbo on your bumper. Yeah, I know that's a stupid thing to do too---but it sure feels good.

the simple reason for this is because the faster driver wants to avoid the slower driver by going in front of them, instead of following.

Its the fast food, instant gratification culture. Me first me first. Also a power trip to a certain degree. One wrong thing and they may regret it the rest of their lives. If they live that is.

because its either they are trying to make the person in front switch lanes, or in their mind they are thinking that they have the skills to follow a person so close and still wont crash them. makes them feel like they have skills.
