Matthew is saying no one knows which day or hour within this generation. I mean, he said day or hour not decades or centuries. He established that Rapture will come in this generation, but the day or hour is unspecified.

No, you can't ignore the first part, and if you question by what he meant by generation then the Bible is too open for interpretation for it to be singular truth.

"remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have died"

if you read on, you will find the answer is no.

"noone knows, however, when that day and hour will come. neither the angels in heaven nor the son. the father alone knows."

hope that helped!

With the pharse "this generation" his is looking a head to the generation that will be living on earth, when the end comes.

The term day or hour is according to the customs of the time of Jesus.

The time frame for a Jewish day was set up by "Watches" which, I have listed below.

Their Time Our Time

1st Watch – 6PM to 9 P
2nd Watch - 9PM to 12 AM

Night Watch
3rd Watch –12 AM to 3 AM
4TH Watch – 3 AM to 6 AM

1st Watch – 6 AM to 9 AM
2nd Watch – 9 AM to 12 Noon

Morning Watch
3rd Watch – 12 Noon to 3 PM
4th Watch – 3 PM to 6 Pm

The signs of the time given in Matthew Chapter 24, shows the Worlds condition, for the Approaching End.

In Luke 21:28 Jesus says; "And when these things "BEGIN" to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."

Jesus said when these things "Begin" not when there finished, or complete.

Matthew 24 all pertains to the signs pointing to or signaling his return.

We know now that Matthew 24:2, where Jesus says; See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Is speaking of the Roman invasion into Jerusalem, in 70 AD by General Titus and his armies, completed in 71 AD, with the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and its Temple.

Showing that Jesus was speaking of a future time, and not the present day.

What Generation was Jesus speaking of?

I don't know. Since the bible is a translation, it's hard to say whether the original word had a meaning that's not evident from the English version. Anyone have any insights on this?

If you read the whole chapter, you will see that all the events mentioned have not come to pass. Has Matt. 24:29 occurred? I believe He is speaking of the generation of man who witness these events all coming to pass shall not pass away until all is complete. I believe these events occur within the seven years of tribulation, before the second coming of Christ to the earth.

The word "generation" probably has a different applicable context with regards to the meaning of "end of days".

Yes, I think so. They were all waiting for it to happen anyday in the epistles as well. There's not even a hint of something occuring two thousand or more years later.

There's reference to at least TWO events there.

One was to come soon ... within the then-current generation.

The other was to come at the end of the age.

One spoke of the encirclement and destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD.

The other spoke of the events which are yet to come.

Do not take the Bible's words literally. Read into them.
