No you can't get sick from sleeping too much but sleeping too much could be an indicator of depression if it's something that is not the person's norm. How much sleep a person needs in a regular night varies from person to person and throughout their life. IE I need eight hours to feel myself the next day. But others might be fine on 6 or need ten. If someone's sleep habit has change significantly to where they sleep alot more than they used to and it was sudden it's likely a sign of illness whether physical or mental.

Feeling tired all the time and sleeping to long (I mean more then usual) is definitly a sign of something. I am prone to anemia (lack of iron in the blood) And I can always tell when I have it because I sleep a lot more. It is also a sign of pregnancy, and collapsed arches. So not necessarily a disease, but maybe your body telling you that something is not quite right. Good luck with that.

yup.... i saw that on house md episode... it's a kind of african disease.... it's usually sexually transmitted i think.... read this:
Sleeping sickness is also known as trypanosomiasis or African sleeping sickness. It is caused by two protozoan parasites that are morphologically similar but cause dramatically different diseases.
Parasites That Cause Sleeping Sickness
These dangerous parasites are carried by the tsetse fly. East African sleeping sickness is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, whereas West African sleeping sickness, also known as Gambian sleeping sickness, is caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense.
East African sleeping sickness is a severe disease that typically leads to death within weeks or months if not treated. The initial bite leaves a distinctive sore spot called a chancre.
Symptoms, which appear one to four weeks after infection, may include swollen lymph nodes, irritability, fever, severe headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and a skin rash.
During the second stage of the disease, the parasite crosses the blood-brain barrier and attacks the central nervous system. Neurological complications include slurred speech, confusion, and difficulty with walking.
Like East African sleeping sickness, West African (Gambian) sleeping sickness is a severe disease that is deadly if not treated. However, it is a chronic disease in which symptoms may not appear for months to years after the initial infection.
Initial symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, swelling of face and hands, skin rash, fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pain, and weakness. Weight loss is common as the disease progresses.
Neurological impairment occurs during the second stage in which the sufferer can experience personality changes, slurred speech, changes in sleep patterns, progressive confusion, difficulty with walking, and seizures.
hope it helps.....

How much is too much? It can't harm you, but it could indicate tiredness, fatigue, etc. I was sleeping 12 hours a day for some time, and I was very tired and dizzy when I was awake. Nothing was wrong with me physically, but apparently I was tired all the time, it was stress or fatigue or something like that perhaps - or I had a virus that no one ever found out and it went away after a while.

Well, it could be from depression, or it could be a metabolic disorder. There are many things that can cause excessive tiredness. I would check with your doctor, and have a complete physical.
