We have taken him to the vet but she could find nothing wrong, unfortuately he chose to walk almost normally at the vets. Back home he hopped out of his carrier! This has been going on for about a month, he doesn't seem to be in pain but obviously its upsetting to see him unable to walk well. Has anyone any ideas what maybe wrong or had a cat with a similiar problem.

I would change vets. There is something wrong with your cat's leg or he wouldn't be limping. I would get a supplement that has Glucosamine and Chondroitin added. Senior cat foods have this added also. You don't say how old the cat is, but I am going to assume he is several years old. If the cat had an injury to this leg at one time, Arthritis will develop around the injury. You will notice a complete difference after adding this supplement to his food. This is what we use for horses, dogs, and humans. Good Luck!

You don't say how old your cat is. One answer is a luxating patella (dislocating knee cap) less comon in cats than dogs, but it happens. it will usually be apparent in relatively young individuals, but somtimes only noticed when older. often 100% fine until luxates, then seem to hop, possibly shake leg until returns to normal, then again 100% fine. if bothersome then surgery may be required to correct. if this is the cause it can speed up the development of arthritis.
Arthritis (osteoarthritis) once present is permanent, and whilst they will have good and bad days, it doesn't tend to 'switch on / switch off'. Much more common in older individuals or those who've had previous trauma. X-rays are helpful but not foolproof.
If the problem is persisting re-visit your vet. sometimes it's not possible to feel the patella movement in a conscious animal, particulary if they are not relaxed (and they rarely are when we try to dislcate their knee caps), and sedation or general anaesthetic may be necessary for diagnosis. if this is necessary I would usually plan a survey x-ray at the same time to access stifles (knees) and hips.
hope this helps.

it would remember on what variety of injury. If that's a hairline fracture, or if there is not any displacement and injury t othe surrounding tissue is minimum, he will possibly not even prefer it. that doesn't cut back the magnitude of having a cat to the vet and not based on the internet for solutions. ;) it must be a sprain or rigidity, or it must be a fracture that must be displaced and slice by using gentle tissue with a unmarried incorrect step. you do not now, we don't understand - you opt for the vet to verify.

Did the vet x-ray the leg and pelvis?
I know of a lady who fell and her lower leg hurt they x-rayed and couldn't find anything wrong . this went on for several weeks and several x-rays . then an x-ray tech accident xrayed the upper leg and there was a major break.
It could be a pinched nerve or a splinter that doesn't hurt all the time. She may lick the spot that she is hurt .just watch for that.
