mother's been dead for at least 20 years; nothing ever came of her estate, etc. How can I find out the details?

The estate is the property(land cars clothes etc.)
The will should be with an attorney or could be in a lock box, a file or anywhere.
I suspect that someone knew about it and didn't want to shear or dispense as was requested . there may not have been a will ever made.
Check with the local courts where she died as that should be where it was processed.

If your mom had a person who took care of her will or read her will, then you should find out from you dad, granparents, or aunts and uncles. You could also go to the person who she bought the estate from.

Contact the register of wills in the county in which she died. They usually have estate records in that office.

maybe you can contact the superior court public information center for archives if there is a will.

for intestate (no will) estate maybe you can contact the county surrogate's office where the estate was filed.

courthouse, her will had to be official and that means it went through a lawyer and he had to do paperwork that had to be filed in the law.
