The music industry charges royalties for every song and cd we buy,what if Greece starts charging for every word or every letter that all countries use every day every second,but its theirs(greek origin,greek source)?how many millions of billions of billions of pounds we owe them?simple maths tells me infinite!!!e.g Britain has aprox 51800 exact words and another 500000 altered words sourcing from greek language and greek literature!!imagine 50 pence for every time each citizen of all countries use each word??to start paying back dated as well,back to the start of their language?do the maths. unimaginable money, who is going to be the super power then? USA?hahahaha Britain? hahhahahahahahah? France? however,ultimately, both Greek and English derive from Indo-European, like most of european languages - including Latin - ... Most so-called greek roots are in fact originally indo-european ones...

Frankly, because they're not jerks. It's the same reason why you can write fanfics and do your fan art, or sing a popular song for a school talent show. They're not jerks. And they don't really give a darn. Besides, Greek is just a part of the language origin. Even Greek is supposively derived from some Proto-Indo-European language. So... they didn't invent the words either. They got them from something else! So why not let them get royalties? Because they're dead. And so are the Greeks we stole their language from. I'm sorry it's such a serious answer to such a silly question... It's amusing, but I didn't find it 'haha' funny about it.

The basic construction of the English language (the first 60,000 words) is German. So by your logic we should be paying Germany a lot of money.

well English comes from a lot of German words, french words and then greek words. You'll also find some hindi words like pyjamas and also arabic words like elixir.
It's just a huge jumble of loads of languages. So in theory, we'd all be broke.
