The best type is the one whose characteristics best matches the needs of the owner:
1. small economical sedan or coupe- best match for just about everybody's commuting/shopping/getting around needs. There's no excuse for not getting at least 30 mpg.
2. pickup- best match only if you haul more stuff than a small car can. NOT a good choice for commuting!
3. SUV- best choice if you want to take out your aggression on complete strangers on the roads. Also good if you are a chicken shyt that is scared of the world and/or are a really bad driver- surround yourself with a couple tons of steel and plastic and don't try to avoid accidents- plow your way through whatever gets in your way.
4. exotic sports car/expensive luxury car/noisy modified ricer or boomer- best choice if you are seeking approval from complete strangers; also feeds fantasies about attracting the opposite sex. Very good choices if your penis is small.
5. owner gets new cars all the time- either has more money than they know what to do with, but more likely has access to credit so they like giving large amounts of money to lenders; like #4 is seeking to impress strangers; or maybe they're completely inept at maintenance/repair and destroy everything they own in a short period of time.
6. owner drives beaters- owner either doesn't have any money or access to credit, or has chosen to spend on other things as they don't give a hoot what anyone else thinks of their car; also they could be mechanically inclined and view it as a challenge to keep an old pile going and going and going...

I've always wanted a Ferrari. . . but, if you want a more diversified product line, you may wish to consider Mercedes/BMW/Volvo. All three make a nice, safe car. Your sense of style will dictate which of those three you prefer, as their product lines have slightly different design philosophies. Mercedes has the best 4x4's of that bunch, if you are lumping those in with cars (G series and Unimog. . . depending on how hardcore you want to be and how much you want to spend). If you narrow it to a specific category of car, you might get a more meaningful answer.

The best type of cars for me is a small car (subcompact car category) such as a Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. It is small, fuel efficient, easy to park, easy to maneuver and easy to wash the car.

I've known many people who drove nothing but Toyotas and they
are reputed to get very high mileage without any major repairs.
