First of all I want to know what an amp does and how much do you think it would cost to get a new stereo system in my car with a medium amount of bass cause my current stereo system is factory stock and the car is a 1999 ford escort ZX2.

For medium amount of bass you probably want to go with a pair of 10 inch speakers if your trunk will accommodate the size of the box. I have a 2000 Saturn LS and mine does. I'm pretty sure your Ford can.

An amp takes the 12 volt DC power from your car's battery and turn it into watts to produce sound from the speakers.

The cost is dependent on several factors however let's say you purchased your system brand new and fairly top of the line then expect to pay 3 to 5 hundred dollars for a brand new amp. 150 to 400 hundred for speakers and box. I also think you are looking to change your factory stereo and if you are not I highly suggest you do however there are ways around it. A stereo would cost you about 150 to 500 dollars. A good stereo which produces excellent sound without any pluses will be around 200 to 300 dollars.

If you want to stick with your factory stereo you will need to make sure your amp has a built in crossover to separate the bass out and you will need output adapter.

your factory head unit has a small amplifier built in, but doesn't supply enough current to drive a subwoofer (8", 10" maybe 2x12")
many aftermarket amplifiers deliver better punch and a more realistic soundstage than factory or aftermarket headunits to smaller front speakers aswell.
if you are happy with the present sound of your ZX2 but just want to add "medium bass", then a good 10" sub in a well designed and assemled sealed box driven by an amplifier with line level inputs and a built in low pass crossover should be enough for you.
many shops will set you up with something like this for well under a $grand. you could probably do it for under $500... but you might not be thrilled with the final results.
I prefer amplifying the front speakers, aswell as the sub, and running a high pass filter on the front speakers so that they don't have the demands of hitting the deep bass notes that the sub is taking over anyway. this gives me way more headroom on the speakers...they can play way louder without sounding like crap or getting destroyed, and they have way more clarity.
maybe your system already sounds clear enough for you, though, you just wanna feel a little more thump.

An amplifier's job is simple, to amplify an audio signal. It recieves an audio signal from the source (cd player or whatever) and also recieves power from the battery, and it send the same signal out, only amplified so larger or more powerful speakers can play it. For a medium amount of bass, you could spend anywhere around $600-$800 for a woofer, amplifier, new cd player, and a cheap enclosure and wiring.

an amp amplifies the signal from the head unit to your speakers, for a good amount of medium bass, get a nice 600 to thousand watt amp and a nice pair of ten inch subs possibly a crossover switch. you r looking at at most 1,000

for what your wanting there is no way in hell that you are going to get all of this with spend 500-700. its almost impossible en less if you are spending you money on some cheap peace of ****. SO you need to decide, if you want new speakers and a amp or 2 subs a box and amp and wires. because all of that will cost around 2000 for what your wanting. sooo for option #1 i really cant help you out that much because i only install the BASS but im sure you could ask someone else. knoooowwww option #2 go with teh bass..... with wat your wanting which i can hook you up, you wont need new speakers cuz you will NOT hear them with this bass, expecally in a suv. sooo what i was thinking for you is 2 fi btl, they are thee biggest baddest ******* subs out there and will blow your mind away. they are hand made in some little place and are Absolutely amazing. if you want to see them in action go on youtube and look up steve maede. then your going to want to get a custom made box just for these. you can have some crazy guy make it for you or look up the pecs online and make it your self. your choice. but pleeeeeaseeee do not get a sealed box. it would be like buying sony xplods. get a huge *** port in that mofo box and this will be hitting 130-140+ db i promis. thennn your going to want to pop open your hoood. take out your sheeety battery buy yourself 2 kenetic battterys put one in the hood and one in the back. easy enough. then you need to get a ho alt (high output alternator) in your case i would get around250-300 amp alt. they are easy to put on just take the old one off put the new one on. you dont feel like doing it have some michanic do it for $50. (i put on my first ho alt when i was 14, you can do it). then you will see that you have all these puny damn wires going to your battery from the alt, from the battery, to the chassy, from the battery to the engene block. now its time for the BIG THREE UPGRADE. (i love this part) all of those wires i just said..... rip em out and throw those in the trash, go out and buy some 0 gauge wire and nothing smaller. then its wayy to long to explain but loook up a vid on youtube about the big three upgrade by EXOcontralto then run the 0 gauge from the battery to your second battery. gro,und your second battery and hook up the pos, hook up another pos and run it to your amp and you are done. now its time to buy your amppp. god i love amps. you are only going to be able to aford one amp that can put out some major power..... the audiopipe AP30001D, this ***** gives out 2500 watts rms at 1 ohm and will make those btl's shake like hell. hope this helps and if you have any questions email or im me.
