I know its so strange. I'm half American half Swedish and when we moved to the US we moved to this region just north of Seattle, so about an hour and a half from Canada. This was just at the beginning of high school, I didn't take any official survey or anything but I can safely say that 90% or more of my peers hadn't been to Canada. It was amazing the ignorance not only about the rest of the world, but of the rest of the country too.
Heres one of my favorite stories about the passport thing in the States:
One time, a few years ago, my wife (who is Swiss) and I were eating at a restaurant in Seattle and the waitress asked my wife for ID for the alcohol, so she gave her her Swiss passport. The girl looked at the passport with a contorted face and said ''don't you have an American one...?''

The United States of America is the only country in the world that contains every climate and can grow every crop. We've got it all!

To be real however, I think it's because 1) most of us can't afford to travel, and 2) the rest of the world hates Americans so why travel to a place where I am hated?

Just so you know, I have lived in South Korea for a year and have traveled for a month in southern Mexico, so yes, I have "gotten out."

There are some of us who do travel -- but truth is -- most don't (outside the U S that is) and the most common reasoning is that there is just entirely too much to do right here !!
On top of that very solid fact is the thing of damn near every culture in the world having a presents here on some level or the other---I mean -- I live in Texas for God's sake and there is a Buddist Temple not 40 miles from my house !!

because unfortunately most of us can't afford to travel abroad, we barely can afford to go out of state. I am planning a trip to Cuba this July of 2007 to visit my husband's family and we've been saving for years !!!! Also it's hard to get enough vacation time as well... sucks though.. I would love to travel more !

I see your comment about being afraid to post and friendly Yanks.. it seems the Americans are almost always getting bashed by Brits here on Answers, so it's great to see finally someone open-minded enough to know we are not all as they claim... I enjoy talking with people from other countries and learning about different cultures..

I think your statistic is off, but you are right about a lot of Americans not traveling abroad. There is so much diversity of culture and geography in the States, I suppose a lot of people are content to get in their cars and travel within the country. Plus, Americans have really limited holiday time and airfare can be outrageously expensive if you don't live in New York or DC.

Well, the US is gigantic compared to many countries in Europe. Most Americans have not even explored their own country yet, let alone someone else's. Also, I would be somewhat surprised were it that low a percentage for passport holders, can you cite me a source?

I don't know where you get your statistics, but they are grossly inaccurate. Currently about 25% of Americans own a current and valid passport. I recently researched this for a project using figures from http://travel.state.gov the US Department of State responsible for issuing passports to US citizens.

To be honest, many americans don't want to see anywhere else. They are happy living in their own little world, where they can use their ignorance of rest to the world to keep them happy. Fortunatley not all are like this. There are some wonderful americans who do travel.

when my cousins came here to visit us from italy they couldn't understand how BIG this country is, they're used to taking a train to go to france for the day! they wanted to see the grand canyon one day and disney world another.
it's so BIG it takes alot of money just to get from one side of the country to the other.
