It is called rigor mortis. This because the muscle tissue is breaking down and the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the muscle cell is releasing massive amounts of calcium. With all this calcium in the cell the muscle fibers lock together and this causes the muscles to become stiff. This will last a predictable amount of time until the rest of the muscle cells degrade and it ends. They will often use rigor as a way to determine how long a person has been dead.

You're referring to rigor mortis. This occurs anywhere from as soon as 10 min. after time of death to several hours. Maximum stiffness is reached in about 12-24 hours post mortem. Depending on several factors, rigor mortis lasts about 72 hours. This is caused by the skeletal muscles partially contracting. The muscles are unable to relax, so the joints become fixed and immoveable. If you want the physiocellular explanation for rigor mortis, let me know.

The body does not become lumpy.

THe term is called rigor mortis. Basically, your body releases a chemical (Adenosine triphosphate or ATP) and goes through a chemical change (hydrolisis of ATP) once you die.

And yes.. after a while (8-12 hours), the body will "un-stiffen" and then start rigor mortis all over again.

Certain factors, like temperature, will also affect a body. If the body is left for several days, it begins putrefaction- (this occurs faster in places with higher tempratures) the body begins to decompose and liquify...this is where you get "lumpiness"

Its become stiff, because the blood stop flowing to the body and the muscle become cold and stiff.
