I'm leaving for the Philippines on December 13th, 2006. I've checked both Unitied Airlines & Philippines Airlines Websites, but I''m still so confused about the measurements for Carry-On Luggage! They make no sense to me.

They all say this: 9" x 14" x 22"

What does that mean exactly? Is 9" the width? 14" the height? And 22" the length???

The dimensions of the bag I'm considering for carry-on is:

Length: 19" inches. Height: 12" inches. Width: 7" inches.

It's like a duffel bag almost, but a bit more square. Will this be okay? I don't want to get to the airport and then have to check my carry-on bag underneath, it's going to be a 25 hour flight...

Thanks!

That is much more clear to me, than the websites make it. First time I'm flying so I'm nervous! Thank you very much everyone!

As far as I can tell, your bag should fit the requirements for size. My friend has used a bag about that size going to the U.K. Duffel bags especially are squishy and can fit in over head compartments. I would check though on any liquid restrictions such as soap, shampoos and make up just to make sure you can check those on board. Have a good flight.

The measurements that the airlines use is for reference only and usually based on the space under the seat in front of you. The 22" in length is based on standard roller bags, placed rolls first in the overhead bin. For fact, overhead bins can withstand up to 450psi; assuming every passenger brings a carry-on and all get placed in the overhead compartment in a uniform position, you will run our of space before you exceed the limits. If you notice, most passengers do not have/use common sense. They throw the carry-on disregarding what position it ended up in the overhead bin, therefore the bin will look full, but realistically it is not.

Height, width and length depend on which way you turn your bag.

Picture the frame they have at the airport to check your bag before your carry it on.

The 22" measurement is across; the 14" is up and down; the 9" is deep.

So at 19" by 12" by 7" your bag should fit with no problem.

roll-ons are usually taller than long. duffels, and suitcases are usually longer than tall. No matter. It is the combined total that is what is important. Length+Width+Height. so 45 is ok for most intnl. carriers BUT some budget airlines are even more restrictive. So, always check with the specific requirements of the most restrictive carrier prior to buying carry-on luggage.

As long as the weight is o.k., then the size of your bag--as described-- is fine. The Length x Width x Height is any variation of those dimensions, as long as they don't add up to more than 9x14x22 (and your's is only 7x12x19).

the answer right after mine makes much clearer what I meant to say--that none of the dimensions can exceed 9x14x12 (I don't care abt the points)

It means no dimension of the bag can exceed any of those measurements. Since none of the dimensions of yours exceed any of them, you can carry it on. I've seen lots of people bring stuff that you can tell is too big and I never heard them told they couldn't. I wouldn't worry.
