The first part of the heart that begins the electrical activity that will cause a heartbeat is the sinoatrial node (SA node) located in the septum of the right atrium. This is a special piece of muscle tissue that will self-depolarize. This is where a normal heartbeat originates. The SA node is called the "pacemaker" of the heart. Many things will affect a heartbeat, some include the origination of the heartbeat other then the SA node and this is called an ectopic heartbeat. Other things that will affect heartbeats are electrolyte balance, scar tissue of the heart muscle from prior heart attacks, hormone imbalances, stress, heartblock and many others.
