I'm bipolar and haven't been taking my meds: Lithium. The problem is, I have a TERRIBLE toothache and other parts of my body are hurting. My mom and aunt were discussing that someone with lithium can't take pain killers while they still take that med, so I stopped. What would you choose: physical pain or emotional pain? I chose to stop the physical. Anyways, I have been having nasty mood swings that piss the rest of my family off. I don't physically hurt anyone, but I am pretty cocky and I protest a lot. I yell a lot and I make nasty remarks to people. I burst into tears and I'm also very irritable (can't be around others sometimes).I should take my meds, but I feel like I can't. I'm in soo much pain and no one can do anything cause 1) I have braces and they need to take them off and 2) we don't have that $ right now, apparently. And so, my mom decided that she might send me to a mental facility, if my therapist and psychiatrist give her the ok.

What do you think we should do?

I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through.

I don't think that your situation warrents you being institutionalized over a toothache, with some body pain. While you're problem is relevant, it's certainly not beyond being solved.

If you're uncomfortable with the drug-drug interactions of Lithium, you should speak with your Dr. regarding other mood stabilizers that will co-exist with whatever pain medication you need to take, such as anti-inflametory (ibuprofin, aspirin, etc).

Other mood stabilizers that work well in containing mania are Depakote (divalproex sodium), Lamictal (lamotrigine). Once you have the mania stabilized, you can offset the depression with an antidepressant like Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride), which is the most bipolar friendly antidepressant available.

I currently take 1000mg of Depakote and 150mg of Wellbutrin and it's worked out quite well.

Recently, I had a nasty achilis injury, where I couldn't walk for a week. I took a theraputic dose of ibuprofen and it relieved the pain quite well and I had no complications.

I've been to a mental instatution (involuntarily) and trust me, you don't want to go there, it will scar you for life. The only point I recommend being institutionalized is if you're a threat to yourself or others.

Hope you feel better.

You'd better check with your psychiatrist or pharmacist about what pain meds you can take with lithium. It's always a bad idea to go off psych meds without consulting your doctor. You sound like you are experiencing a mixed state, which needs immediate medical attention to keep you out of the hospital. Go back to your psychiatrist to have your medication adjusted NOW!

Honestly, when you have bipolar you should stick to your medication. Especially, if it making you have outburst and moodswings.
You should definitely talk to your physican about this. It is a serious problem.

My bf's cousin is actually bipolar. She was first diagnosed with bipolar last year. At first, she became erratic and emotionally unstable. Nobody knew what was wrong with her. Her family grew worried of her conditioned as the days passed, finally she was hospitalized due to a traumatic episode. Her family decided to send her to a mental institution for several days.
I believe that they did not make the right decision. It was a act of impulse on their part. The regret it too know. If they had to do it over, they said that they would not have sent her.

I think that you should definitely ask your physican, and deeply think about it.

I wish you the best of luck.

Maybe you should talk to your pharmacist. There's got to be some pain meds. you can take with Lithium. It's not advisable to suddenly stop your psych meds. I also take them for depression. Hope you feel better!

You really need to stay on your meds. It is a chemical imbalance, and the meds help to correct that imbalance.
