I do not believe man has been broken down into species.
In any case, they're constantly discovering older, earlier religions.
I believe the record right now is a Botswanian snake religion, 70,000 years ago. Just your standard Homo Sapiens here.
Did earlier forms of man worship God? Probably. However, all we have records of are rituals...not actual "God" figure (as of yet).

Calling the worshipped as God, The Supreme Being came later. Initially it was worshipping just the elements of Nature. Everything surrounding the first man was considered divine and wothy of worship. Early man never worshipped God as God. he recognised every form of Mother Nature, including Mother Earth as worthy of worship
