Does guilt work?

Use a spray bottle of water and spray the kitty using the word "NO" at the same time. Provide a scratching post for the kitten to claw. Keep the nails clipped with nail clippers.

You can get plastic that has adhesive on the back and put it on the places he/she is clawing. Kitties love to climb onto high places and will use a "cat tree" if one is provided. Please do not declaw your kitty. It's a very painful procedure. The vets literally cut the claws out of the paws. Just think about how painful it would be to have your fingernails or toenails removed. However, if you have to put a cat down because of the clawing, it is a much better choice to declaw. Cats do learn what they can do and what they can't do. The can even learn to do tricks if taught. Good luck!

Buy a little cat playhouse/scratching post. When you see the cat making it way towards the furniture, or whatever it's scratching, immediately pick it up, scold it and then put it right at the scratching post. You might also want to try a spray bottle with water, or put a bit of cayanne pepper around the area where the cat scratches. It's best if you try and break this habit while they're young rather than letting it scratch and then scolding an older cat.

I've had cats the last 15-20 years and this is what has worked for me with all my cats:

1. Say a sharp "no" or "uh-uh" everytime the kitten is about to scratch something forbidden.

2. Offer it an alternative. Show it the scratching post and remember to praise it everytime it scratches on the posts and toys you have for it (you do have scratching posts and toys, right? Otherwise you need to get some).

3. If kitten is persistent you can squirt it with a bit of water.

4. Be patient. :)

hehe, no guilt doesnt seem to work, itd be great if it did tho! try to reward the cat for not scratching on things like couches clothes etc. using a scratching post can work or it can teach the cat to shred stuff, it all depends on the cat and the consistency of the owner. if you reward the cat for using the post, it tends to work better.

Put tinfoil on the objects that you don't want him to scratch for a little while. Cats typically don't like the feel of it. Also, find out what breed of cat you have. Some prefer hunting birds, some prefer hunting mice. If you have a bird cat, buy one of those fishing pole looking things with feathers on the end. If he's a mouser, buy one of those round disks with the mouse inside of it. Make sure he is taught how to use it and gets a few minutes in everyday. It will tire him out and keep him occupied from other endeavors.

Guilt? Is this your first cat? Felines DON'T feel guilt. Get it an older cat to pal around with. The more mature feline will put little shredder right in his/her place, plus it will teach him/her how to be a good kitty, while providing love.

Get some kitty toys. Another option is if you are going to keep the cat indoors at all times you can have it declawed and that should solve your problem right there. I disagree with the post about not diciplining your cat... they have to know whats not okay. My cats do. We have a fake tree in our living room that our cats would climb up. After a few no's and spats on the butt they no longer touch the tree.

As already advised, kitty toys - ones they can 'kill' and scratch at will divert them from other things. Keep all documents and papers away, they will hunt them out though, lol !! Try and entice kitty to a scratching post.

Cannot believe that some peeps have suggested de-clawing, that is awful. Imagine having your fingernails removed? It is their natural way of climbing, etc to use their claws. Whatever you do don't consider that.

Water spray, is both harmless but effective way of chastising your kitty, one look at the bottle being aimed is enough to deter them!!

I have three kitties myself. I brush them several times a week. No hair and they love the attention. This is esp important in long haired cats. It also cuts down on the little surprises you find in the carpet in the morning.. My cats will take the brush off of me and rub their little faces on it they love being brushed so much. Start this when young and it will stay a good habit all the kitties life

You could get it declawed. I always thought this was a horrible remedy though. There is a product clawed soft claws. The fit right over the claw and come in fashionable colors. A more humane way to treat the problem.
