How do I hold a seance?

I believe there is a friendly presence in my house, and I want to contact him. I believe his name is Michael, and he was the previous resident of my house. He was believed to have died in my current dining room (it used to be a bedroom). How do I hold a seance to contact him, and should I do it in my dining room?

If the spirit that dwells in your house wishes to make contact, it will.
You have to be extremely open to it and want the contact. The Ritual you wish to use is honestly not needed. You've no need to trap the spirit in your house into answering questions.

Contact close friends and or family that believe in you and the Rituals of contacting spirits. You need at a bare minimum three people.
Hold the ritual in the room you most feel the spirit.
Place candles in a triangle in the center of your table, six inches apart.
Bless the room and the candles against evil influence, this is done through prayer.
Light each candle starting with the one closest to your chair blessing it as you light then repeat the blessings with each of the other two.
Sit at the table with your associates and take each other's hands then call to the spirit to join you.
Chances are you will repeat the ritual several times before the spirit makes contact.
Do not try to be forceful in your requests.
If you yell or scold the spirit will become upset just as you would.
Contact can only be made if these things exist.
1: You and your associates must truly believe in the contact of spirits.
2: The contact is made for a good reason that is not selfish or in any way evil. I can not warn you enough about this. People pay for upsetting spirits.
3: An air of comfort and kindness be maintained throughout the ritual.
It is better to allow the spirit to make contact on it's own without use of rituals and rites. Those who have played with Seances and other mediums to contact spirits generally do it for giggles or invite spirits that are better left alone.
The safest practice is to rest near where the spirit is felt and listen. Keeping your mind relaxed and letting your body relax and feel the area around you. Spirits are energy and you can feel them through your energy. You can hear them if you do not refuse to listen.

Be very careful about this idea. It is not something to do on a whim.And requires some training to do it right and to protect yourself and those who are under your protection as part of the seance.
Try to find someone reputable that has the training already if your in a hurry.
Otherwise you will need to read and practice books that deal with Psychic self-defense and protection first. then learn how to cast a circle and control it.
But yes the last room he occupied would be the best place for it.
It is easy to think of holding a seance but it is not a innocent game to play around with.

Then just talk to him. You don't need a seance or anything. Just talk to him. And yes, if the activity is mostly happening in the dining room, then do it in the dining room.

People make it way too complicated and they don't need to. If you want to talk to a local ghost, then just talk to it. Seances, ouija boards and the like aren't needed. Those things are dangerous to play with because you don't know what will come through the doorway you open to the otherworld.

At least if you just talk to him without all the rest of the stuff, you'll know that its actually the spirit in your house and not something that came through that open doorway thats intent on messing with you.

Sister, why do you want to hold a seance? Why do you want to contact a person that has passed on? Do you know that if you open yourself up to the spirit realm, without the protection of the Lord Jesus Christ, then you are subject to all of the evil spirits that are in the heavens?

When you die, you depart to heaven or hell based on your acceptance of Jesus. There is no purgatory, limbo or any other false places taught by false prophets who believe in false doctrines.

Unlike many others who may have tried to force you to believe, I am just presenting the truth to you. You can do more as a believer who wants God to open you up to the spirit realm than a medium, witch, or other conjure worker.
