I happen to speak Spanish , I learned it in school and on my own. My husband is Cuban and I asked him about that once, I said most English speakers only hear noises like a bunch of sounds strung together and he said that before he knew English he thought English sounded that way too. I think any language that is foreign to someone sounds fast or strange to your ears. ( Even though I do speak Spanish, I can tell you that the Cuban people do speak really fast, the Mexicans tend to speak slower and more sing songey, each country has their own dialects and accents.)

It is probably because you're a beginner.

The languages involved included Italian and British English ... But there is research that has been done that suggests that if you take a foreign language, it seems more difficult to pick up because your brain is wired to process information in the way that is most efficient in your native language. So maybe you have to learn how to think like a Spanish speaker. I thought this idea was interesting. The link is here:

In the beginning is very difficult lear Spanish because the speed of comments. This hapens because the Spanish People usually not use a little pause in every phrase. The English People using a little pause in the comments, this is a better form for a compresive dialog. But in Spain the people have don´t care in "pause" dialogs.

In South-America, Afrika and Italy the dialogs are very fastest.

that's because you aren't familiar with the phonics yet. Somethings simply take time.... hang in there compadre, you'll get it.
I only talk too fast when I'm in the presence of white folk that might understand if I slow down

actually they call that "Comiendo las lettras", eating letters. It means you say half the word when you're speaking and any experienced spanish speaker will figure it out. Kinda like the ghetto slang in the states.

No they don't speak faster then us. You just aren't use to hearing it. It also has to deal with the way your brain works. Some people are visual learners and others are audible learners. So if you are having a hard time understanding it it maybe because you are a visual learner and you learn better by reading and writing. Other people are visual learners and so better at hearing and speaking.

I am hispanic and I speak spanish and english. My wife is white and she speaks english and a little bit of spanish ( un poquito). And yes, sometimes we hispanics speak fast, I know my mom does, and a lot of my cousins, but let me tell that when my wife speaks english with her sister, I speak a good english but I can not keep up with their english, they sound like gattling guns going at each other. And I think that is too fast.

Everyone from ANY big city speaks fast. People from the country speak slowly. This is a fact world wide. Nothing to do with the Spanish

don't worry about it, when i had my first year learning spanish it was very intimadating. it still is a bit fast for me being a 2nd year student ( mainly because my teacher speaks it most of the time ), but i agree with the comment above just practice the phonics, read + writing will definatly help you. workbooks are good.
