I'm only in my first semester in college at sam houston state university in huntsville, tx.. and I want to get a degree in criminal justice (figures, if your familiar with sam houston).

Anyway, I would like to chose a career with decent pay.. im guessing about $40,000 out of college would be good pay. I definetly have in mind being a police officer, but I would like more information on other careers. Thanks.

Oh, one more thing... I'm looking for something I can do right out of college.

I would like careers where I don't have to be a police officer first, thanks.

I work seriously think about Homeland Security, that is where the job security is. You may start off low but depending on where you go you can make up to 35,000 a year JUST in overtime and people do, alot of people do.
After the first year with a college degree you can make more then 40,000 a year, you get a pay increase every year plus you have the yearly government locality pay, it's awesome.
The work is not hard, CBP has a strong union and you can do alot of different types of jobs in CBP and the travel opportunities are promising.
I would consider Customs and Border Protection.
Go to CBP.GOV on the net, USAJOBS.COM to check out jobs.
Good luck!

What you need to do is go to the computer and start doing some research. Do your research on all levels of government. Various departments and Law Enforcement careers. Probation, Parole, Corrections, etc. Since you are just beginning your college career and working for you degree, you have plenty of time to research for various Law Enforcement Careers. Remember, that now days most Law Enforcement agencies are requiring a Baccalaureate degree, or higher. Been there, done that.

I am becoming a Forensic Scientist. Most of them are Police Officers though. However, I want to go to the crime scene and collect the evidence. With a criminal justice degree, you can be alot of things. Even a teacher, just all type of things.

I believe a probation officer might be a decent choice. Not terrible starting pay, flexibility with your schedule, and if it's a big deal -- mainly unarmed.
