At seventeen you would most likely be hired as a host(ess) dishwasher, or buser. Of these, I would say the best is a host, but it depends a lot on your personality. Some places will hire you as a server, and at other places you have to be 18. I think everyone should work as a server (or tipped employee) at some time in there lives, because it makes you appreciate what other people do, and you can make really good money if you are good at it.
sorry if this posts twice, computer problems.

When I was 16, my first job was bussing tables and sometimes dishwashing at a local diner. I got tips and a discount on food. It wasn't too bad. Sometimes I'd host and sit people down if the manager was busy with something else.

Most likely though wherever you apply, they will put you where they need help. It could be cooking, serving, cleaning, etc.

Good luck!

Erm............. restaurant jobs are awful if you've never worked before. You get below minumum wage because you get tips and you work like a dog.
At this rate, you're better off with retail, and or coffee joints. I know starbucks starts people off at $8-10 an hour, and and big corporate clothing companies have set rates going in of at least $8 an hour.
Good luck with your first job.

The manager will probably assign you where you are most needed. You can always ask about areas you are interested in, and they may train you in that area. I used to do kitchen prep...cutting up veggies, getting desserts ready, ect..ect. I always thought working the salad bar was fun! Don't get caught eating stuff in the cooler or anywhere!! Have fun! :)

Try a place like Olive Garden, Outback, or Longhorns. You can either be a hostess or a waitress. And hopefully make good tips!
