Why cant I get it to work?Will the more expensive ones work?

It sounds like you don't have an A/V receiver hooked up to your TV. To get the sounds out to the speakers you need a device unless the speakers are hooked directly to the TV.

The DVD player is a common way to get surround sound but only through a DVD. It has to do with the outputs and how the DVD player fits into you TV system.

Look at the back of your TV and write down all the connections supported or go on the internet with the model # & brand and speak to a knowledgeable person at an audio store. It's easy and you don't need to spend the big bucks. Just use the best connections to deliver the sounds and buy the best speakers your money and ears can get you.

The answer above is correct, but the real answer is in your question with the word "cheap". Your system may not have the proper jacks or performance to support your need.
