You will know when they seem to be not enjoying life anymore..stop eating well, and wagging their tail..Or, if they seem to be in pain more than not..
It is a very hard decision, that only the one who loves them can make, and not to be influenced by other people who don't love the dog..

I have a 16 year old large breed and I have a calender that I mark good day and bad day on. When the bad days out weigh the good I will make my final decision. I work in the veterinary field as a technician and I recommend it to clients dealing with the same issue. We are selfish and often can not think beyond our grief over the loss. I try to be objective which is what the calender helps me do. Quality of life should be the main concern. My dog has been such a great member of my family that it is the final act of caring I can give her. I find that most of the time you will wait until the poor baby is miserable and that is not good, they never seem to just go in their sleep.
Good Luck and my thoughts are with you. You have a tough decision ahead of you.

You need to ask yourself, is my pet suffering. If your pet is suffering, then you need to let them go. If you are only hanging on to them for yourself then it's time to let them go. I've done this three times in the past, it's so hard, but it is what is best. Are you keeping them alive for them or for you?

if the animal is in any pain, isnt living a full life, then they should be put down, if they are in good shape, are happy, and healthy let them live out the rest of their days in peace. all in all do whats best for the animal

You know in your heart. Be brave and remember your pet has cared for you in his/her way for a long time - are you ready to care for him/her when they most need it? It is such a hard decision to make, listen to your heart.

first of all how old is your dog & what is wrong with it ? think of you dog as your best friend would you want him to suffer ? to be in pain ? what would he want you to do for him ? to go out quitly in your arms ? or painlessly with a simple shot. ?
