The toilet tissue should pull from the outside of the roll.
If you have guests coming you can take the outside of the roll and make a "v" shape with the first sheet, looks really nice.Just fold the the first sheet into a" v "shape by tucking the sides under.

People keep referring to what is done in hotels, the reason hotels have the edge on the outside is because there is not as much waste when the roll is pulled this way. If the edge is at the back against the wall it rolls easier and the user will end up with more paper than really required. This is wasteful and waste affects the bottom line. Ever thought about the yearly budget for toilet paper at a hotel?

I usually put mine over the top. It's just easier to grab the end.
But if you have cats, it is better to have the roll against the wall. It is less tempting for them to pull it off the roll.
Or you can cut the bottom and top off a litre soda bottle, slit it down the side and put that over your roll. It frustrates the cats to no end!
I currently have an upright vertical dispenser spindle. It feeds from the left. Go figure.

Inside, against the wall. Why? Because it's less likely to get tangled in anything if it's against the wall. Plus it tears off better.<*)))><

Outside, over the top for me. Can't stand it any other way. When my husband puts it in, and it is against the wall, I immediately change it. It doesn't look right .

As long as there is toilet paper on the roll and I'm not left to figure out how to make do without it ..I really don't care which way its facing - just be glad you weren't left to drip dry (or worse)

Inside against the wall because one will use less and not have unnecessary waste. If you pull it the other way, more is dispensed. Have a nice day.
