I had this problem and for a while it seemed I would never be rid of it- I tried everything on the market and what the doctor suggested. My daughter has a very full head of hair and it seemed impossible until I found the cheapest absolute most effective thing to do:
Olive oil- not mayonnaise or lighter oils- you want good thick olive oil - coat the hair really well- you might want them to spend the day playing outside or playing in the tub when you do this- make sure the scalp and the hair are good and solidly coated with olive oil- it is fine if it is drippy, wrap the hair in plastic wrap and leave it for at least an hour- wash the olive oil out- you should have no live bugs at this point- if you coated the hair well- the bugs will be suffocated.
Next the nits - vinegar. I used all the "enzymes" that were supposed to release the glue and all it did was release me from my money- vinegar- soak their hair in vinegar- I had my daughter recline while her hair soaked in a bowl of venegar and combed her hair out in the bowl- the nits slid right out.
Do the obvious washing of the bedding, seal pillows and unwashable stuffed animals in airtight plastic bags for 2 weeks.
Preventative measures- lice hate oil- obviously you dont want oyu child running around with greasy dirty hair but there are some things you can do. I have found tea tree oil of little effect in getting rid of lice but it can be helpful to ward them off- mix a little tea tree oil in their shampoo and / or conditioner- you don't need much. Use a treatment like VO5 (I use something called TCB- with chamonile and jojoba oil- it is made for african american hair but I use a very small amount and lightly coat their hair and scalp every time we wash) it will keep the lice away and their hair will be shiny and nourished- my daughters hair is amazingly beautiful and we have been able to keep it 100% lice free.
Another thing you might consider is the Robi comb- this is an electronic comb that zaps the lice that get caught between the teeth of the comb and kills them- it is completely safe for children and chemical free. Lice have a 2 week life cycle - you can run this through their hair anytime you think they may have been exposed in order to kill any lice before they have a chance to lay eggs, or just take 10 minutes and run it through every two weeks - if you do the olive oil treatment, this should not be necessary- but it is good to have one of these combs on hand. I got mine from walgreens fro about $15.00- it is worth a lot more than all of the chemicals and noneffective over the counter treatments for lice
I hope this helps- I really feel for you- when it comes to lice it certainly feels like war!

Head lice go for clean hair rather than dirty hair. So it's not a hygiene issue you should be worrying about. You get head lice when you put your head on something which has head lice on them. Now to get rid of them you can buy a wide range of anti-head lice shampoo.

Ok, so you are using the shampoo and combing all the lice and nits out? Are you washing all clothing, bedding, stuffed animals, etc in really hot water? If it can't be washed in really hot water, put everything into a plastic bag and throw it into a freezer for 48 hours, then wash normally. If your kids lay on the floor, you need to make sure your carpet is cleaned, if they lay on the couch, then that needs to be cleaned as well.
Make sure they know not to share combs and brushes with other kids, and don't wear other people's hats.
Good luck.

Scalp should be competely dried up after every bath. Because activity of lice would be maximum on wet scalp and paste of azadrichta or neem should be applied on the scalp. Care should be taken while moving close to children with lice. Hair should be regualarly combed and oil should be applied regualarly on scalp. Because too much of dry hair may increase the activity of lice.

first make sure that they aren't sharing hair brushes with ANYBODY. also lice likes super clean hair. if you make them wash their hair multiple times a day then they will also get it alot. it will also be good to make sure that their bed and other stuff animals are sprayed down. the lice could be hiding in their and re-infecting your family members. dont worry many kids gets lice, once they are oldner its less common
good luck!=]

Rub olive oil (well any cooking oil should work) into the scalp and hair. throw a shower cap on and let it sit over night, my friend did this with her little girl .she kept getting it over and over agian. the next day wash it out. she said that the oil helps "smother" the lice, and the ones who said that they prefer clean hair is right. Its alot easier for them to grab ahold of, and when the hair is "a day or two dirty" they have a hard time grasping on to it.

Sometimes, if you wash your hair TOO much, which is common after you get head lice because your trying to prevent it, can make it easier for the bugs to live on thier scalps.
