Cashews in the shell are inedible and must be cooked first. They can then be roasted. The shells contain an irritant that can cause a rash like poison ivy does.

why can you buy cashues in the shell?
if you mean to say .... why can't you buy cashews in the shell?
Ans. you can buy cashews in shell but if you want to eat cashews then you need special processing after which the nut inside can be removed and eaten dont try to do yourself the cashew shells have a strong & powerful liquid which will burn your fingers. you should see the people who work in cashew processing factories if u dont believe me
