When children watch cartoons full of violence(even if the characters deserve it) like "Power Puff Girls" or "Tom and Jerry",parents decide that whatever the child sees on TV,he/she takes it to his/her own life. When your child watches Jerry doing something bad at Tom,that doesn't mean that she will do it the next day to her best friend. She is 7 years old and big enough t understand what happens on TV and what won't happen in life.I remember when I was younger,my parents were afraid that I was watching Power Puff Girls because there is a lot of violence. But I didn't think of that like "Oh,Bubbles hit that boy!I'm going to do it tomorrow!:)))"...NO,it's not that way. It's like when a teenager watches naked girls on the internet. The teenager is absolutely normal but he just needs to see that and that doesn't affect any way on his behavior or growing up.Don't worry so much.Your daughter won't become the violent girl from the cartoon. At 7 she is not a baby.I may only give you one advice - don't say bad things about the cartoons she watches and better don't even discuss them.Your daughter is having fun seeing these cartoons and she won't take it into her life as an example of behavior.

No, you are not alone. There are a lot of cartoon I do not let my 5 yr old watch because of the inapproiate content. Billy and Mandy, Ed, Edd & Eddy and other shows that are rude and show no consequence for bad behavior are some. Just because they are on the air, doesn't mean they are appropriate for all ages.
I have tossed this question around quite a bit, especially when I think back to the Loony Toons shows I loved as a kid, with the shooting, crossdressing and violence of the coyote and roadrunner ( I would love to see these shows again) but I believe that children are bombarded today with more adult and violent situations then I was, and I try to present them in as controlled an environment as possible so I can explain and answer any questions she may have.

Yes some cartoons are inappropriate but some aren't all that bad. They've come along way since I was a kid. Your best bet would be to watch the shows first and see what's ok and know when it comes on and let them watch it for short periods of time. You don't want to take away cartoons all together but limit the times and monitor the shows. Also, be aware of the time. The programs that are aired vary through out the day according to what age group the network feels would be watching at certain times. Other than that try getting something more educational on tape. Most libraries offer a variety of titles so your kids wont get sick of the same one.
Also, you would know how your children would handle certain levels of cartoons. You need to know if your children truely understand that it's not real and shouldn't be mimiced to base what your children should watch.

You are not alone. I also feel that cartoons are inappropriate for children. My son is only 16 months old, but I will not put the TV on at all. I am a SAHM, and feel that TV is used way to much as a babysitting device and the shows that are out there are horrible for them. I will not put the TV on once while I am home with him, especially the news....I think that is the wose thing to expose your child to at such a young age. But, even the older cartoons with buggs bunny and elmer fudd -carrying around a gun shooting things. The subliminal messages or adult jokes that are put in animated movies these days are not much better. My husband is a huge Disney fan, and I am sorry, I just will not subject my child to it, not until it gets better and more educational! Maybe I am the bad parent...I guess time will only tell.

Whenever I babysit (I do not have any children) I never let them watch Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon. Some shows are inappropriate, stupid, and lack messages children need in television shows. I prefer Noggin, Playhouse Disney, Nick Jr., or PBS Kids. Disney Channel can also be okay, but maybe wait until she's at least a year older. Disney relates more to older children.

Look at what you grew up with. You turned out right. (I hope) If anything happened then at least keep the kids from watching it till they are old enough to know the difference between fact and fiction. If you truly want my opinion, it isn't the kids fault if they grow up wrong, it is the parents. No matter what we do, we ask what if? Stop asking and follow your heart, If it means letting him have violent unessacary cartoons then go for it, if it is to take them away, well then, still a good choice, only god knows what is in store for the future. He refuses to tell.
BTW, I agree with an earlier comment, there is a foriegn device called a power switch, ecxercise it sometime.

Oh I know, it makes me soooo angry when my daughter is watching cartoon network and shows like that come on. I dont even let her watch that channel anymore, I mean some of these shows are ridiculous. Like family guy, i walked in to the living room one day and that was on......it showed him stabbing someone and blood spraying everywhere. I mean c'mon that is just plain nonsense and should not be on a cartoon station. No wonder we have so many murderers, rapist, and thieves out there. I think all the cartoons out there like that should be taken off the air, or atleast not on a child t.v. station.

Cartoons like the classic ones from our childhood are okay. I think our parents thought it was bad to see Tom and Jerry pounce on each other, but all of us girls thought it was very funny. It never gave us ideas to pounce people like the cartoons depicted. Cartoons, for the most part, are meant to entertain with the understanding that it's not reality. It's too exagerated to become a mixed message. That's my opinion. You know your daughter and do what you feel is best. Ultimately, you know. That was just my insight.

I agree with you 100% because those shows are not seetings good example for little kids at all. You should purchase cartoons from the late 80's and early 90's for child to watch.
