If Islam is a Religion of Peace, why have they been at war since the 7th Century?

I keep hearing how Islam is peaceful and tolerant. Besides my question above, why is it then that a Muslim can practice their faith in Europe or America, but a Christian cannot do the same in many Muslim countries, Saudi Arabia in particular?

I heard enough of people keep bringing the middle ages time when Catholic killing people, or crusades. First of all, who's crusade was it ? There's Islam crusade and christian crusade.. Both had an agenda.

But, I saw none of the Christian taking revenge. Even when the people who did the killing only got 1 year sentenced. IS that fair.. No !!! The Christian keep silence, because if they try to fight for justice, they'll be thrown in jail, the sentence will be longer than the killer.
I don't know, I guess people have a lot of hate. And I don't mean all Muslim are like that. Most people that did it was brainwashed by their cleric. And most of them are uneducated.
Saudi Arabia, consider a holy place for Muslim. That's why no Christian or other religion allowed to enter their country.

Wars have historical back ground. Islam has nothing to do with two world wars. Imperialist forces have captured almost entire world. Ottoman empire was dismantled bringing instability in Middle East. All these events are part of history.

Ever thought about separating religion and people? There are people who understand their religion and follow it, there are those who interpret it any way they want thus creating their false ideologies to further their cause. We muslims do not hide anything of our religion as there is no need for that, nor do we deny any verse of the Qur'an as that would amount to disbelief, nor do we change the text of the Qur'an, certainly war is mentioned in the Qur'an, but to understand it's rulings you can not simply isolate a verse or two (like so many people do) without looking at the entire text and the practise of the early muslims. NO religion, yes not even christianity is all about peace, there is a time for peace and a time for war, and there are many verses in the Bible to prove that, both OT and NT, but when verses are quoted from the Bible in this sence, most christians deny them although they are as clear as they can be, and give them a completely false interpretation. Doesn't this amount to hypocrisy? For example look at this verse: [Matthew 10:34] "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."

I ask a christian what does this mean (at least I ask for their interpretation although I could just as easily run around "knocking" christianity because of this one verse) and they will 9/10 out of ten say "oh no Jesus came to bring peace on earth"!!!!????!!!!) Now to me that would be like me saying "the sky is blue" and them saying "no the sky is green". Or you show them the verses about war, rape, incest etc, from the OT and they say "oh but that is the OT". What in the world does this mean? So than I reason and say "ok perhaps you mean that the OT has been abrogated by the NT. But even if this is in fact the case, it still shows that God has indeed ordered the believers long before Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to wage wars against the disbelievers. Which in turn disables the claim that God would never order wars to be fought and that thus Islam is not the true religion.At the same token, I could also say "oh but the OT has not been abrogated since according to the NT Jesus (peace be upon him) said he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it". And then the christian says" no no we longer have to observe the law". So which one is it? Please get a grip and be TRUE to your own beliefs, believe as He wants you to believe not as you choose to believe, after all Jesus (according to the Bible) said "if you want eternal life, follow the commandments". He did not say worship me as you worship God (the father). I am also curious, for "knowledgeable" christians here, why isn't the original manuscript available to common chrstians, why do only the scholars of christianity get to "see them". Why don't you include the hebrew and greek in your translations as we do with the Qur'an? Is it perhaps because if that was done, it would no longer leave room for changing, adding, deleting of the text as it was done for centuries and continues to be done. After all, there is a new "version" printed every year, and some even miss many chapters. If you say "oh it doesn't matter the doctrine is still the same" I then wonder, what is the the word of God? The chapters that are left out or the ones still standing? If all, then why is it necessary to add and delete any of it as time goes by? The common folk of christianyt should really wonder about this,and start asking their leaders for proofs rather then just believing everything they say, as this amounts to idolatry in any religion.

Islam is not the cause of War. Politics and land are usually the reason. You talk about wars, allow me to mention the western countries who have been occupying poor countries for thousands of years. Muslims were not part of World War I and II. And I don't even want to mention how many millions of people died.

Christians can follow their religion in Saudi Arabia. I don't know of any such law which prohibits them from following their religion or asking them to convert.

They haven't been at war. I like to think of it as a conflict. =) and its not the religion, its the people 'claiming' they are doing it for the religion, which they are not.
as for the Saudi Arabia thing, i think because they are hard-conservative Arab Muslims. but like in other countries such as Iran there are churches and everything.
