I'm trying to grow my hair out long. I know, probably not THE BEST look for a guy but considering how cold it is I'd rather not go chop it all off (and I look terrible in hats). My problem with long hair is that it becomes extremely flat and is pretty straight. It looks pretty bad. I'm almost embarrassed to go out in public with it the way it is naturally, that's how bad it is. So I figure if it gets a little bit wavy it'll have a more natural bounce and look better overall. The problem is, I don't know how to get that look.

I need a natural way to do it. I don't have any kind of tool, nor any girl to help me. Anyone know of a way? My hair isn't THAT long yet (it's probably only 4 to 5 inches from root), but I thought I'd try to start it early and hope it'll have better results this time.

Thanks.

Well, probably if your hair doesn't naturally look good in a longer style, I don't think I would advise trying it. Men look the best when their hair fits their hairstyle and their hairstyle fits their personality.

If you absolutely DO want to try to get wavy hair, you will have to mold your hair someone. One option is to try a modified version of the pin-curling. Women used to do this in the old days when curling irons weren't common. It involves rolling your hair around your finger and pinning it to the scalp while slightly damp and sleeping on it. You could perhaps modify this a little bit and try just twisting your hair here and there and pinning it while you sleep on it.

You also mentioned that your hair is flat. Try adding some body and see how that helps the long style...Mousse it or gel it while it's wet and blow dry it. This will give you some pouf that you will have to arrange to look nice, but it may work.

However...I say keep it short if the long doesn't work. There are plenty of hot short styles...especially the messy ones!

Give this a try: Shampoo, towel dry, comb, and then take a dry towel and use a scrunching effect (squeezing the hair) to dry excess moisture. Blowdry hair holding your head upside down, flip and brush or comb hair and use a spray such as Aussie Scrunch, spray lightly and then scrunch with hands using the squeezing effect again. If you use to much spray your hair will look wet or oily.
You also need to buy a clarifying shampoo to use at least once a week, this shampoo will remove any build left behind from other shampoos and styling products. The first time you use it, shampoo 2 times back to back. Products left behind can cause the hair to lay flat, because it causes it to be heavy and limp.
Hope this helps.
