You wake up in the morning and find yourself back to back in bed with an unconscious violinist. A famous unconscious violinist. He has been found to have a fatal kidney ailment, and the Society of Music Lovers has canvassed all the available medical records and found that you alone have the right blood type to help. They have therefore kidnapped you, and last night the violinist's circulatory system was plugged into yours, so that your kidneys can be used to extract poisons from his blood as well as your own. The director of the hospital now tells you, "Look, we're sorry the Society of Music Lovers did this to you--we would never have permitted it if we had known. But still, they did it, and the violinist is now plugged into you. To unplug you would be to kill him. But never mind, it's only for nine months. By then he will have recovered from his ailment, and can safely be unplugged from you." Is it morally incumbent on you to accede to this situation?

I have discussed this scenario in a class before.(it is from Judith Thompson)
I find the analogy doesn't work in most pregnancy cases. (aside from rape which the reason in only a very small number of cases) Having sex is not the same as being kidnapped and forcibly hooked up to another adult being. Having sex leads to pregnancy, it is how we survive.
1)In this passage it is through no fault of your own--pregnancy is not normally through no fault, it's through sex-protected or not we all know sex can lead to pregnancy
2)To unhook the violinist is a passive action, he would have died anyway, not you fault--to have an abortion is actively killing not letting die, without you the fetus would not have been in this situation, the methods of abortion are NOT passive, they are not even close to being unhooked and allowed to die. (it is not letting die it is killing-whether you think it is a baby or not it IS killing the fetus)
3)Being bedridden for nine months is a lot worse than pregnancy (most of them require very little variation from your regular routine)
I will add more.....

Cutting to the critical parts, I have no obligation. The rape-like aspects are troubling and enough to terminate. The violinist is in no worse position than when I was brought in.
And to compare an adult to a blob of cells on a uterine wall (or test tube) is entirely inaccurate. The adult has a capacity to suffer that those cells cannot match. The violinist may be in for a very painful death, but it sounds as if dialysis would keep him running for at least that nine months.

Yes, you have to save him, because if you let him go you are murdering him. Even though it sucks to be in your situation, you cannot kill people. It is not really the best way to argue abortion though, because then the question becomes "What if it were nine years? Or the rest of your life?" (By the way, the answer is that one must always let the violinist stay hooked up so that he can live).

Your mother could have discarded your little lecherous body from her and you wouldn't have one single chance to post this question. Are you often sorry you were born, do you wish you hadn't been? What a shame it is to suck the brains from a baby that is fully developed all in the name of it is my body. What a shame it is to stab a baby in the skull when it is crowning just so the responsibility is not there. There is to much birth control on the markets, only people who are mentally challenged should need an abortion because they have no clue about the contraceptives available. The rest of the women lay their bodies down willingly knowing the consequences of their actions.

professional selection. i do no longer precisely approve abortion as a ethical selection, yet i think of that if a woman needs to get an abortion, she might desire to have each precise to. i might in no way get one myself except there replaced right into a controversy which would be volatile to me and/or the little one (which includes ectopic being pregnant) or if I have been ever raped (God forbid). I additionally think of that no be counted what the regulation says, all of us is often going to come to a decision on abortions. i might lots extremely have those human beings get their abortions carried out in a sparkling enviroment with the help of a doctor who knows what the hell they're doing than in some back alley with a coat hanger.

That is not a good analogy--unless, of course, a pregnancy resulted from rape and the "baby" was instantly adult-sized in the womb.
However, that situation would have made me severely angry. I would have to "unplug."

For one thing kidnapping is a crime. The kidnappers should suffer jail time for this. I am Pro life. But I'm tired of these alien analogies!

ahhh yes, BUt many would forget, not all are troubled by this moral delima. that Doctor would be unplugging me, and the hospital compensating me for any problems that i may have for the rest of my life. and if the doc refused, he had better hide very well when i did get unhooked.
this stranger's life means nothing to me. but if they had asked i probally would have donated a kidney to him. but now that you have attacked me, you better assume that when given the first chance that i will attack back.

In the VAST majority of cases, women who get pregnant do so as a result of their own actions, so your analogy is inaccurate.
