You can try enriched soy milk or enriched rice milk. They take some getting used to, but the chocolate flavors are actually pretty palatable. They contain the calcium you would get in milk. You can also drink calcium-fortified orange juice to get your calcium. Even some of the "sports" drinks like Propel now contain calcium...be sure and read the label to make sure you've chosen the one that does.

You don't have to drink to get those nutrients. You can take calcium supplements....they come in many forms and flavors, like the chocolate chews or chewable tablets. You can also get calcium from foods like broccoli, brussel sprouts, egg yolks, tofu, almonds, canned salmon with the soft little bones, and some fortified cereals.

Milk also contains proteins, so be sure and get your proteins from other sources like meat, eggs, dried beans, fish, peanut butter.

There are a lot of nutrients that are in milk that are necessary for bone health. While you can take a multivitamin it doesn't replace a natural health source. I'm lactose intolerant as well and have tried a variety of milk replacements...soy, almond and rice milk. For the past 10 years I've used Soy Silk products. They have plain, vanilla, chocolate and coffee flavors. They are similar to cow's milk and can be used in the same ways cow's milk is used. Recently I've tried 8th contient and they're milk is equally as good. My son used to drink Lactaid which is milk without the lactose which is what you are allergic to. You still get the flavor of regular milk without the side effects.

Milk has minerals (mostly calcium), vitamins A and D, and protein, among other nutrients. To replace this nutrition, you can drink fortified soy, nut or grain milks (for protein and fats); eat dark leafy greens such as kale, chard, collards (for vit A). Nondairy sources of vitamin D are harder to come by. But good sources include oily fish (tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines, cod liver oil), and sunshine. Ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen is usually sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D. It is very important for individuals with limited sun exposure to include good sources of vitamin D in their diet.

There are calcium fortified orange juices on the market now. Also just do multivitamins. I am milk allergic as well. It is no fun. Lots of things that I LOVED!!! ICE CREAM would make me very sick and I did not know what was making me sick. Then we found the correlation.

Be very careful...many labels tell you that products have some form of Milk derivative in them.

There are many dairy-free substitutes that contain calcium and are nutritious and palatable, like soymilk, almond milk and rice milk to name only a few. To be certain there's no milk, check for labels that say "dairy free" or are marked "Parve."

You could also consider taking allergy treatments to be desensitized since milk is found in so many things.

Silk (soy milk)
Non-dairy creamer
Rice Dream (instead of ice cream)
Tofu

You may want to make an appointment with a nutritionist or browse some books on the subject at your local library or bookstore.

Best wishes.

We use Rice Dream that is fortified, and eat lots of dark green veggies and eat canned salmon with the bones in it to get our calcium.

Orange juice is supposed to have lots of calcium. There are various soy beverages but to some they taste gross. Calcium supplements are probably the best way to go.
