They are all good, so it will depend on your budget and needs. I personally would go for the lowest mileage I can afford, irregardless of age, and check that it hasnt done too much heavy off-road work - get underneath and have a good look. The early Hilux's (4runners) are something of a cult car, so if you want a classic 4x4, go old, maybe 1986-88. The newer ones are much nicer to drive, but are more expensive to buy and repair. My personal fave, the 90-96, a great truck. As a footnote, yesterday a 2006 3.0TD Hilux pulled me and my 10ton HIAB truck out of a slippery spot without so much as a blink, was mighty impressed! Check these youtube vids, here in NZ we worship the Hilux.

i in my view like the third era ('ninety six-'02). The engines are effectual and stable, and that they're a huge step up from the 2d gen ('ninety-ninety 5). they are roomier, have greater effectual and effectual drivetrains, and nicer suspension. they are additionally obtainable with the electrical powered rear locker, that's a godsend on rutted trails. They tow properly, get good gasoline economic equipment, and are super to very own. They do carry their fee properly so which you are going to be able to could discover one with a brilliant number of miles with the intention to get the fee below $6000. I even have an 'eighty 5 that's mind-blowing. I purely placed clean paint on it and that is suited...i'm keeping it continuously! My mom has a 'ninety 8 and that's an extremely superb truck. (Your '89 isn't too previous!!) i'm not loopy bearing directly to the '03 and up. The pass case is controlled by using a dial (i like a shifter on the floor). i might somewhat have a locker and espresso gears than the recent 4x4 traction administration and hill descent administration/anti roll-back. i think i'm purely previous college.

The 4-Runners are good in any year mechanically, but if you have a sense of self-preservation, buy the newest one you can afford. Not trying to scare you, but for a big SUV, these guys collapse rather willingly when in an accident (check out the crash safety ratings, they are abysmal up to I think about 2000).

there isn't really a best year.....it all depends on how new you want it, and what features you want.....and how much you are willing to pay....i personally like the 05's.
