Make a diagram of the room featuring all the standard fixtures, door swings etc.. Remember light neutral colors are in right now. Tile floors can be cold but if you heat them they are divine. How big a tub do you want??? What can you get into the room without tearing out a wall. How far do you want to take the remodeling to?? Install towel warmers and get new accessories for the bathroom. Go gold or chrome?? Shower door or curtain?? Make all you decisions on paper and then go from there . Make sure you have a GFI plug-in lots of older homes don't.

The first step to planning a bathroom remodel is evaluating the existing space. If you’re planning on updating or renovating an existing bathroom, what would you like to see improved? The second step is Think about your future plans :-Much of what you decide to take on during your bathroom renovation work should depend on your future plans. If you plan on moving out of your home in the next five to seven years, a modest project that updates that bathroom for mainstream tastes may be a better option. If you plan on staying in the home for more than decade or for the rest of your life, building the custom bathroom of your dreams can make more sense.now Create a budget :-Bathroom remodels are expensive, so make sure you spend wisely. Take an objective look at your budget and take a realistic approach about what you can afford. Invest in high quality workmanship and high quality materials. Don’t skimp on items like the faucet, sink or toilet, for example, because this is a highly utilized area and you want things that are going to hold up. Cheapest isn’t always best. Add updates accessories like towel warmers, towel warmers make a stylish look for a bathroom. You can purchase a best towel warmers

A fairly priced pedestal sink < $one hundred i'd pull up the floor and modify the sub floors because of the very truth it truly is a bathing room and moisture may have intruded the floor and precipitated dry rot and mold probable i'd positioned down fairly priced ceramic tile or vinyl floor. If the bathe/bath is an unsightly tile then that you will be in a position to paint that too. Paint the walls to make a international of replace -- a formidable colour probable a chief reflect for decrease than $one hundred. look at Ross or Marshalls or TJ Maxx for the reflect and doubtless get it for decrease than $50 that you will be able to bypass inexpensive on tap decision yet you get what you pay for, even with lower than $one hundred may tarnish or rust over the years. If by risk you've a house make particular that you need to get them to modify the bathroom if it historic and by no skill operating even with the undeniable fact that you need to favor to pay the deductible.

It's one of the biggest remodel jobs to do in a house after the kitchen I did both and it takes a lot of thought, get about half dozen wax rings for the toilet because you will probably take it off several times and make sure you have a cap or plug for the drain pipe because gasses come straight from the sewer from there, no biggy if you plug it.
If you are not familiar with remodeling I suggest hiring someone

I agree with lenshure, it might me better to leave it up to the professionals depending on what you thought was a horror about it. True, on Golden Girls, the girls redid their bathroom(badly) but they ended up getting a professional I think.
Find a person who is a jack-of-all-trades contractor, they are a little bit cheaper than hiring a plumber. They do this to survive and are trained in plumbing, wireing, etc.

I take it you bought the house. What about the bathroom that you don't like the most? It may be cheaper in the long run to have soomeone else do the work.

Your first thing is to make a budget. Next to the kitchen the bathroom is the second most expensive thing to remodel. Also make sure if you get a contractor that they actually have their license.
