It seems like they only are being done on the west or east coasts- I'm in Upper Michigan and I definitely have a challenge for them. But, you never see anything in our neck of the woods. I have been to their web pages and they limit the areas that they go to.

If they limit the areas they go to, you can't get on regardless of the project. It costs too much to leave that area. You can try writing them and sending a video message, but chances are you'll be overlooked because you're outside of that area.

They're looking for a challenge but, as you've noticed, only if it's near to certain larger cities. The same applies to DIY shows here north of the border. As the number of television channels goes up, the advertising pie is only so large. So there's fewer dollars to spend on production costs making it most attractive to produce in and around larger cities where there's a greater choice in terms of crew members available, they don't have to put up crew and/or talent in hotels and pay per diems (meal money), they don't have to pay for transportation and if something happens to the gear, there's easily accessible local replacements for rental.

All I can suggest is keeping your eyes peeled to broadcaster websites for that to change. The upside is that as time passes, production companies are going to be looking for an angle that sets their show apart from the legion of other DIY shows out there.
