Well its quite easy; when you open your computer it will tell you Windows 2000 or xp or 98.
another way is; when you click on the start button it will say what it is on the left or the bottom.
If you bought your computer recently, then most probably its an XP.

The easiest way to find out is to look at the start up sequence. The booting sequence has a splash page with the name of your operating system.

When you boot up your computer it will say Windows (whatever) all over the monitor screen.
There are other ways to find out, but my suggestion is a no brainer.

If you go to My Computer under the start menu, there should be a link to "view system information" or something similar. It will tell you there!
